My husband buys lotto tickets and he plans—down to the
very last nickel—where the money will go. One of his favorite activities is to
tell me his plan. Big mistake.
Because my mind works in a different way than his. I
have no desire to win mountains of cash. I think of all the ways the money
would change our lives, our perceptions, and our relationships. I think of the
conflicts and repercussions of “won” money as opposed to “earned” money.
The reason I bring this up is that I have a writer
friend who said basically the same thing about her wife buying lotto tickets.
All this time, I thought it was just me thinking this way. But maybe, just
maybe, it’s the writer thinking this way.
As I was pondering the writing of this blog, I drove
two miles to pick up some lunch for me and Jordan. While at a stop light, a red
VW Beetle with black spots passed by. And this is the thought process that
followed—and yes, I took notes because I am a writer.
A VW Beetle.
Ladybugs are beetles. How clever.
Ladybugs are
happy-inducing. Probably because they make us think of sunshine, flowers,
Spring.
I wonder if
God made ladybugs so we wouldn’t hate all bugs. Because, really I can count on
one hand how many bugs I actually like. Or even tolerate. Ants—when they’re
outside, butterflies—but are they considered bugs? Mmmm. Ladybugs…
Wait.
Ladybugs are plant helpers. I bought some frozen ones from Shorty’s a few years
ago to put in my garden. Are those considered cryogenic ladybugs? Can you
freeze other bugs and revive them? Could we save the honeybee population this
way? Probably already been considered and dismissed.
How long do
they keep ladybugs in stasis? If nobody buys them, do they keep them
indefinitely?
I wonder if I
still have ladybug descendants from my frozen colony? Why do I want to
capitalize frozen? Why are ladybugs so elusive? They always seemed to be around
when I was a kid. I wonder if it’s because we were surrounded by berry fields
and fruit trees.
How far
can—or do—ladybugs travel? When they abandoned my yard, was it just for the
next one, or did they go further? I wonder how you’d track that?
What is the
lifespan of a ladybug?
Oh, look.
Taco Bell.
And thus, we come to the end of my ladybug monologue.
Sadly, I may have left some of it out in the translation. But, there in a
capsule, is the way this writer’s mind thinks.
How does your mind work?
That car is adorable! My mom loves lady bugs and VW Beetles, so this car would be perfect for her. :)
ReplyDelete"Oh, look. Taco Bell." HAHA! Now I'm hungry for tacos. :P
