writing contests

I'm somewhat of a skeptic when it comes to contests. I rarely win anything and often wonder who those mysterious winners are. Like the lucky raffle tickets I bought last month. Fifty dollars each and an estimated pay out of one in seven. Well, out of five- I didn't win anything. Not one dime.
But it was fun to try, and to dream about what I'd do if I had won. And that brings me to another contest, namely the Golden Heart. I just entered. Gulp! Now I really am nervous because I've never entered before. And I've heard so much talk in the past about the scoring, plus there's no feedback, only a placement score. At any rate, I'm in it for the fun of trying and the dream. Just like the lottery, it's fun to think... what if?
How about you? Anyone else entered?

  1. Wow! Good for you. I just had to jump over to the RWA website and read the requirements. I'm not quite ready with a completed manuscript. Maybe next year. Good luck to you.

  2. Thanks! It's something I've wanted to do in the past but always felt I wasn't ready. But then I realized what an editor /reader is looking for is a unique story. You can't overlook the mechanics in manuscript format and stuff, and of course the manuscript has to be completed, but I believe if the characters are compelling, and the story line a strong one, anything can happen. : )
I appreicate the good wishes and happy writing to you!

  3. Good luck!!!
What ms did you enter, and what category? I've entered once in the past, and got scores from the top to the bottom.

  4. I entered "Letters From Inside," the convict story. Romantic suspense catagory. Probably not a good choice since most of the judges in the past thought the delinquent daughter over the top. And I kept the prologue too, which may or may not have been a wise decision. Don't you just hate inconsistant scores? The last contest I entered I had two near perfect scores and the third judge knocked me out the race.
I'll keep you posted and thanks D'Ann for the well wishes.
