Writing goals: How Many Monuments Have You Built?

"Excuses are the tools with which persons with no purpose in view build for themselves great monuments of nothing." I heard this from the mouth of a girl whose idea of a good time was indiscriminate sex and fighting. She looked back at a night of really poor judgement, and said to the other person involved, "I'm sorry." The other girl asked for an explanation. The girl replied, "There is no explanation, just excuses," then she used the above quote.

Unfortunately, when it comes to writing, I have been guilty of building monuments of nothing. I always had an excuse for not writing. Because of this, for the first time, I'm setting writing goals. I decided I will build no monuments when it comes to meeting them.

Goal 1:Finish revising and resubmit "Dreamers."
Goal 2:Finish current wip
Goal 3:Write 5 days a week (blogs and e-mails don't count)
Goal 4:Query, submit, revise,repeat

And the biggest goal: Build no monuments.

  2. I love that quote. I think I will steal it, lol! And I hope she got her act together. Sounds like she had a good mind and enough selfawareness to do so.

As for writing, I plan to work at my writing job, but focus harder on my fiction. I really missed chances last year. I have revisions on my 1st book, and I want to start a new WIP. Also, I have to admit to myself that, although I truly love mysteries, I am afraid to try writing them, and I need to just go ahead and give it a shot--after all, what do I have to lose?

  3. D'Ann, thanks for coming by. It's nice to have someone on board.

Leah: The girl did eventually get it together. I was so proud of her. And I want to be a source of encouragement for you. Don't be afraid to try your hand at mysteries. You might find you rock at them.
