Cover me!

Before you think this is just another shameless plug for my book, it's not!

It's a post about book covers.  I didn't initially like mine when I first saw it. This guy doesn't depict Derrick at all. But, after a time, I grew to like it, then even love it.

Imagine my surprise when, after I posted it on my author page on Facebook, another author told me we had the same cover guy.

I didn't realize we had the same picture. Hers is on the right, but otherwise it's the same guy, same pose. Her background is light.

I think I might have the same guy on my debut book, Wild Horses, as my friend Sara Walter Ellwood does on her western, Gambling on a Secret. But it's not identical, like the cover of Shot is with the other author's.

So, here's the question. Is your cover model(s) on another author's cover? Do you care?

  1. I do share the exact same stock image with the lovely and talented Cindi Meyers. My story Pinocchio Syndrome and her story Always A Bridesmaid share covers. I can't imagine two books being more different with the same covers, but I'm happy to share with her.

  2. It's possible they are, I don't know. My cover models are very real women, who have been professional models for at least the last 8 years. I have a whole collection of photographs of these ladies that I use for inspiration. It is very possible that they are on other covers, as a number of them have appeared on magazine covers in the past.

It doesn't bother me in the least. I put them on my covers to thank them for their inspiration. Why shouldn't the rest of the world enjoy their images as well?

  3. It hasn't happened to me, but I don't think it would bother me--they always make sure there are differences. I think. :-)

  4. Two days before my first novella, Hog Wild, released, I found out that Christine London was releaseing a book that had not only the same woman on a motorcycle on her cover, but she had the same TITLE for her book as well. This being my first book I kind of freaked, but haven't thought much about it since. I like my cover better, anyway. LOL

I like both of your covers, D'Ann. :)

  5. I have the same people on my cover for The Sky Pirate's Wife as Sara's alter ego, Cera Dubois. I actually see that couple pretty frequently. I'm tinkering with another cover, but it'll have to wait until after my book tour is over. It's not uncommon for self-published authors to change covers though.

    1. Hi, Allie! I didn't know that. In a way, I think it's kind of cool! I love your cover!

  6. I see tons of books with the same model(s). The models on the cover of my novel are used in MANY others. I tried to purchase a picture/pose that isn't used much--lol.

Anyway, no, it doesn't bother me as long as there are enough differences on the cover to make each book stand out on their own.

    1. I had never noticed before I became pubbed. Isn't that funny?!!!

  7. My cover for Obsession is the exact same cover for another RS author. At first I was disappointed but then I just had to shrug my shoulder. I've been told that images are expensive and the publishers only have so much money.

I was reading a post by Linda Lael Miller a few months ago and she was on a cover shoot for her book. Apparently you have to be REALLY BIG for a publisher to create a cover just for you.

    Someday....

  9. Very interesting. I'll have to see what happens when I get published.

  10. I don't have these kinds of covers, so can't comment.

  11. Yes, Sexy red's cover model is shared. Doesn't bother me.

  12. I'm not published, but I probably wouldn't mind at all. :)

  13. The Life After cover is a shared cover. Different background, but otherwise the same. The woman on the Dreamers cover is shared. I share her with Stephanie Morris and a young adult author. Bothered me at first, but not so much now.

  15. And what's funny is that I found the stock photo of the guy on Shot on one of the photo sites when I was looking for cowboy photos to buy for my websites.

As Allison already pointed out, I have the same couple on A Hunter's Angel as she has on her Sky Pirate's Wife. And mine was done by the cover artist for The Wild Rose Press.

I also saw the same couple that I've used on my self-pubbed short story, Bloodwine, used on a published book.

Jimmy Thomas (the guy on my Gambling on a Secret, Sheri Fredrick's Remedy Maker, Jenna Jaxson's Only Scandal Will Do and your Wild Horses) is on something like 3000 romance novels.

I really don't mind the same models being used, or even the same poses, but it does throw me at first when I see it.

I love all of your covers, D'Ann!

  16. I haven't found either of my covers (yet) on another book...with the number of books being published these days - both traditional, small press and self-pub - it's bound to happen more often, though.

  17. My cover artist told me that she was using the same cover art on my cover as a previous one she'd done, but was changing it to make it look completely different. I love my cover--it's perfect for my novel. I'm okay with the same stock image being used, then altered. No biggie for me.
