Autumn Love

Today as I was trying to figure out what to write about (procrastination, anyone?) I heard birds in my backyard--lots of birds. And I got it. My favorite sounds of Autumn which segued into why fall is my favorite time of year.

For one--the sounds. Birds have be particularly vocal of late and in my backyard. It could be the unharvested apples hanging from my trees--which would be all the apples they produced as I don't harvest--let's get real. Or the fact that a few of my flowers are still in bloom. Whatever it is, I love it. Then there's the tinkling of windchimes. Fall in the Pacific Northwest (PNW--hereafter) is warm and windy before the rains come back. And today there's a nice East wind coming down through the Columbia Gorge. It's 71 degrees, sunny, and  the perfect day.

Which is why I love fall above the other seasons. See, in the PNW, our seasons are a little behind everyone else's--like our fashions. While summer doesn't get here until early July, when it does get here, it stays--and this year's case--stays and stays. But while the days get warm, it cools down for a comfortable night's sleep.

I love fall colors. Although we don't get that much here and I have to be satisfied with looking at pictures. I live in the Evergreen State and there's a reason they call it that. It's always green. These pictures are from my patio taken this morning. That said, the colors of the fall palette are my favorite all year around.

I love Starbucks Pumpkin Spice Lattes, candy corn, and my mom's pumpkin bars.

I love the new television season where my old faves return--Bones, Castle, and Grey's. And new faves begin--Last Resort and hopefully, Nashville--I have high hopes for that one. But I had the highest hopes for Revolution and so far, not impressed.

I love witches, scarecrows, and pumpkins. Thanksgiving and Halloween. Holiday Bazaars.

And I really do look forward to the rain returning. I am a PNW born and bred -- rain is in my blood. And I love, love autumn storms--wind and rain.

My list could go on and on, so now I turn it over to you--what's your favorite thing about Fall.

  1. I love to see the leaves turning especially the Autumn Ash in our backyard. I love the chill in the air and the brisk wind. At present we have rain and possibly rain mixed with snow on Saturday coming in and I can't wait. Today we turned on the fire in the family room. It makes the room so cozy. Love it. :)

    1. I love Spring when it arrives especially for the new flowers. Although for us, it's just a warmer winter. Warmer rain showers :)

  4. Here in Oklahoma we sometimes seem to skip right through fall, but as the temps get cooler and I can begin wearing my sweaters, I know it's almost here. The trees will change, overnight, and since we live in the country, the smell of burning leaves mixed the the morning chill says fall to me.

    1. It's been so dry that we are under a no-burn quarantine right now. But I do love the smell when we can and I love the smell of early morning.

  5. One of the reasons I loved living in Germany was the stark change in seasons. It wasn't just the weather, which seemed to change overnight, but the fests. Fall brought harvest fests, from the large on in Stuttgart to the smaller Krauterfest in one of the small towns. Advent heralded all the Christmas markets. Spring and summer each had their own celebrations.

  6. Great post, Margie. I love the colors and the smells and certain foods and drinks, and drinks, and...er...things that go along with the seasons. As much as I love warm weather anywhere, I'd hate to give up season changes.
