Ramblings of a Sleep Deprived Mind

It's 2:00 a.m. and I can't sleep. Again. I seem to suffer from insomnia nearly every night these days. That makes no sense. Every night these days.

I'm rum-dum. My eyes are tired, aching. My shoulder hurts. I need to rest. I can't sleep. Argh!

I'd write, but I can't think straight. I'm working on an untitled novella titled only Starla, for the heroine. I just finished one called Shiloh's Song. They're connected, part of a series. In the state I'm in, I'd probably have Shiloh doing what Starla would, and vice verse.

There's no point opening a document and staring at it. The words run together and look like this afgd gyby oorts...gibberish.

The cats are restless. Running. Bouncing. Jumping off the furniture. They're as wide awake as me. Maybe I'll do some Wii bowling. No. Too much trouble to hook it up.

Facebook is the same old crap. Political ads by the thousands. 2nd amendment. Hate Obama. Recipes. The ones that make me cry--too many homeless pets that I can't help. The floods here in Colorado. Fewer and fewer posts by friends.

Online poker? I don't like to play cards. I hate Solitaire.

I check my sales numbers on Salesrank. Bleh. Think about opening that new WIP after all. No. I just can't work on it tonight.

Maybe I'll eat something. Not a good idea. Everything that sounds good is too fattening. Damn. Maybe a hot chocolate. Yeah, that's the ticket. Except milk gives me heartburn and then I'll be up an extra hour.

I could email the husband. He works out of state. Nah. I already talked to him on the phone tonight. Nothing new to say. I could sext him, I guess. No. That would just be weird. For both of us.

I'm tempted to go outside and walk. Bad idea. I'm afraid of the dark and the dogs are in bed. If I wake them up to go with me, then they'll be up all night, too. Barking.

My neighbor gets up at 4:00 a.m. If I can't sleep soon, I'll still be awake when she leaves for work. I could go over and ask for a cup of coffee. Would that startle her that early in the morning? She might shoot me.

Well, I've killed half an hour here. Only a few more hours until dawn.

See you then.

  1. Oh I feel for you. I'm an insomnia sufferer too, but not to the same extent. I took an ambien once and still ended up counting the cracks in the ceiling. Blackout curtains have helped, but not always. Hope you get some restful sleep soon.

  2. I'm not an insomniac, but I feel for you anyway. Hope you got some sleep sometime this morning!

  3. So sorry to hear this, D'Ann! Melatonin is something you might try. Its natural and you can buy it right online if you don't have a health food store nearby. Hope you get some sleep!

  4. D'Ann, perfect post for me! I'm a fellow insomniac. I won't take sleeping pills anymore and didn't like melatonin. I've tried chamomile and toast in the middle of the night, even a shot of my husband's Southern Comfort, but nothing works when I can't get to sleep. Usually it's because something is troubling me. There's always some reason even if we don't understand what's the root cause. I slept last night from exhaustion and feel better this morning. My advice, avoid coffee and chocolate, all forms of caffeine when you're not sleeping well. Sleep will come naturally when your mind and body are ready for it.

  6. I know all about those "awake" late hours...too much on my mind and thoughts race through at high speed. Family drives me crazy; I'm a control freak and want to "fix" everything.
Write? Sometimes I CAN get some writing done and it's legible. Most times, it's garbage.
I blame it all on hormones, too. Women are supposed to "carry on" no matter what...little sleep doesn't matter.
Naps help...if you have time for them!

  7. I hate those sleepless nights...I usually spend them watching TV because once I hit midnight, I can't function well enough to even read. Hope you sleep tonight - or get a good nap this afternoon.

  8. I'm sorry to hear that D'Ann. I hope you find what works for you and get that much needed rest.

  9. Remember what you're feeling and thinking and seeing during this restless time, D'Ann. One of your characters will experience the same thing, and you'll be able to draw from your source to write her through it. Your words as you describe your night are poetic and so thick with emotion they're dripping. You're pulling deep. There's a reason you're up, and it's to feel...to note those feelings. When it's time to sleep, your body will sleep. Good luck!

  10. I hope you get some sleep soon. :) I know how hard it is to focus on so little sleep!

  11. You mean to tell me there are some people who sleep all through the night? Wish I was one of them. I don't know if it helps or not, D'Ann but as you see you are not alone. Do you think it's a writer thing? Even when I'm asleep my brain is still running on high. I would take NyQuil but I wake up with a hangover. I'll have to try melatonin.

  12. D'Ann, I go through boughts of insomnia. I tried sleeping pills for awhile. They'd help me fall asleep, but not stay asleep. I stopped taking them.
You very well could be pre-menopausal. That can cause insomnia. LOL, not that that helps you.
But yeah, nothing more annoying than not being able to sleep--and it begins to affect your life.

I pray you will be able to fall asleep. We can't function properly without it.

  13. Poor D'Ann.

I normally sleep like the dead unless I really really tired, then I can't seem to relax my body sufficiently to make it sleep. I need to learn some relaxation techniques.

    Hope you find sleep first.

I've tried to write thru the wee hours because a book refused to let me go, but the next day I can barely make sense of my writing.

  14. I like your rambling post. (am I weird?) It took me on Mr. Toad's Wild Ride of your brain functioning on no sleep. Not a scary place, more like a rock skipping water. Hope you find your sleepy place tonight. Exercise during the day can help. It's a reason I do my 2 miles in the morning...so I can sleep at night.

  15. Thanks, all.
I so hope I can sleep. Sleep would be nice. :)

  16. I'm up. Cleaning up kitty, who pooped in his crate. Then cleaned up cat puke. Different cat. I hardly ever get any sleep. That's no doubt why I can write. Calgon take me away!

  17. Hang in there, D'Ann!

I'll be praying that your mind and body cooperate to get you the sleep you need! Consistently!
