Keep On Writing On....

I think this needs to be motto right about now.

My WIP has me befuddled and not in a good way.

I'm not sure if I'm writing an NA--the main character is between her junior and senior year of college. Or if it might be Women's fiction because there's two alternate viewpoints of the same character--her senile grandmother.

See, the main character, Emma, is finding letters from her grandmother's younger years that tell her own story.

And then there are times the older woman has her own senile stream-of-conscious thoughts.

And there's a hero and I'm not sure if I should throw his viewpoint into the mix and muck it up some more.

Some of the letters I've written ahead of time and add as needed.  So, last night I was typing the story into my computer because I lost in the downfall of my netbook. I had a copy on my Kindle, but you can't transfer from there to here--unless you know a secret I've yet to discover. If so, leave me a note in the comments :)

And while I was retyping, I noticed that I have two versions of a major reveal. Which one is better? Should it go here or there? Agh!

So, I think the best course is just to plug away. Write some more and worry about the inconsistencies in the revision process. But, it's hard for me to relinquish that control. I want everything solved right now. You'd think I'd be a better plotter with that mindset, wouldn't you?

Okay, time to end this, suck it up, and produce another couple of pages.
Advise accepted with extreme gratitude.

  1. You have ALL my sympathy but no advice. I've used hero's POV for so long I can't imagine NOT using it, but I don't have a grandmother being helpful. :-) Good luck!

    1. Since I've written only YA for the past number of years, I've only had the one viewpoint to worry about, so it's kind of foreign to throw in the other side ;)

  2. I feel your pain, Margie, but giving up that control can also be really freeing. With the MS I just finished I had to do that. For the first time I knew a couple of things that would happen later in the book that I was...and I needed to get those scenes down . i can't explain the urge, I just had to do it. So my advice is to just push on and see what happens. Revisions are there for a reason! :)

And on the Kindle problem - I *think* if you plug it into your computer (using the USB like you'd do to side load a PDF), you can reverse the process. Click onto your Kindle, highlighting the title and saving it back to your computer.

    1. Thanks Kristi--I am so going to try that! I have other bits and pieces of WIP's that I haven't transferred yet. You rock!

  3. I'm sorry you're having problems with your WIP. I hope you can find the solutions soon. As far as the heroes viewpoint, I think I'd leave it out, At least until you can fix everything else that's bothering you. Good luck!
