First off, I want to thank Kristi for her timely and much-needed post yesterday. I read it on my phone, got up and got busy.
Why?
Because to be honest with you—I
haven’t written anything substantial in weeks. Well, even after her post, I
still haven’t but we’ll get back to that in a few paragraphs.
There are a couple of reasons I
haven’t written anything of substance for a while.
One is focus. Or lack thereof. I’ve
been trying to balance several WIP’s and a complete Bix overhaul. So, a little
bit gets written on this one, a little bit on that one, and some Bix
reworkings. And nothing seems to progress. So--I have to figure out which one I want to finish the most and buckle down--per Kristi's advice.
But, my biggest obstacle is
exhaustion. My day job is wearing me out. I am on my feet all day—only sitting
on my fifteen and half-hour lunch. I am constantly in motion-either ringing up
a customer, cleaning up the shoe department---
GARAGE---BEFORE |
Even though I share a strip mall
area with my favorite Barnes and Noble—AKA the only one in the Couve—I am so
tired and sweaty—oh, did I forget to mention the sweat? I go to work with freshly
showered and dried hair. I come home with wet hair, sticky clothes, and a
sweaty body. Seriously. I can’t even stand to smell myself. It’s been in the
nineties for like an eternity now, and the AC at work is a joke.
So, my great plan of going to
B&N after work is a wash. I mean once I get home and get a shower, all I
want to do is veg in front of the tv in my jammies. I don’t want to get dressed
and go back out.
I know, you’re wondering how
Kristi’s post helped me. Hang in there, it will come.
So, the other day I told Mike my
dilemma and he said, “You need a plan B.” And he didn’t mean a pill. We’re well
past that stage of life.
Fast forward a few days—maybe a
week—and I decided I have to redo my office space because right now, I share
the room with Jordan and I never feel like it’s “mine”. You know? It’s a big
room—one of those added-on ones where they took the back of the garage and
turned it into a family room.
But, to do so, I needed to clean out
the garage and and reorganize all my treasures junk. And that’s what I
did yesterday. I read Kristi’s post. And had an “Aha” flash of brilliance, got
up and put on my yard clothes, and headed for the garage.
Six hours later, Mike came home and
asked if I’d forgotten Jordan was volunteering at The Humane Society. Uhm—no.
Yes. And I’d yet to have a shower, so he took her.
GARAGE---AFTER. I hope you can tell the difference. |
Now, the garage isn’t completely
done. There’s still some stuff to go to Goodwill—my car’s only so big, guys.
There’s a massive dump pile and a couch that needs to be moved into the living
room after we move our old one out. But, I moved a bookshelf, a dresser, and a
file cabinet out of the “office” space and into the garage which will enable
me some flexibility.
I plan to create a cozy corner for
Jordan on the far side of the room—her computer, tv, loveseat and chair will go
over there.
And in the other 2/3 of the room, I’m going to make a writing area for me under the big
window.
And if that doesn’t help me write,
I’ll have to look into Plan C. Anyone have a beach house on the Oregon Coast?
Oh, and a car I can borrow that will make the trip? And a job that pays well
enough to take some time off??? Anyone???
Oh, I envy you that room. I would SO take it right about now. My office is in our living room, which is usually great because there is a big picture window and window boxes ... but it's summer which means bebe is home (her school desk is also there) so along with the great view I get a lot of, 'whatcha working on now, Momma?'
ReplyDeleteGreat post, Margie! Hope the dedicated office works for you!
When the girls were little, I had a corner in our dining room. So, I totally understand. I had to tune out a lot to get any work done :)
DeleteI will admit that my lovely office space (well, lovely to me--it's a mess) has enhanced my productivity, but I still have a butt in the chair problem! My sympathies on the heat, Margie.
ReplyDeleteButt in the chair is probably my biggest problem..well, in the writing chair. I can get in the TV / reading chair just fine :)
