SECOND TAKE

Portland's Waterfront
by Margie Senechal

Agh! I had my post almost complete and went to get a picture and lost it. Okay, so I closed the window I was typing in without saving it.

I was going to write about the lack of stellar rom-com movies in recent years. Where have all the Sally's gone?

The last movie I remember "needing" to own was 2009's The Proposal. And I still find it funny, romantic, and ohhhh, Ryan Reynolds. Heavy sigh.

The best rom-com's have a finite balance of comedy and love. And most of the comedy stems from the characters. We love Sally's neurosis' and by the end of the movie when we learn that she's alphabetized her VHS collection, we're thinking, "that's so Sally".

We find Charles (Four Weddings and a Funeral) always late escapades charming and when his friends trick him into arriving for his wedding early, we're in on the joke with them.

But, the absolute key ingredient to a great rom-com is the chemistry of the couple and the fact that we fall in love with them as they are falling in love.

Okay, so I have to amend my earlier statement as I went looking for memes, I found one for Something Borrowed, circa 2011. That was the last movie I 'had' to own and watch again and again. Although, it was based on one of my favorite books and I'm still waiting for Something Blue. Come on, team Emily Giffin, get'er done.

But alas, it's time for me to sign off and get to work, so further discussion will have to be tabled. If you have any suggestions for me, please leave them. And if you're a writer, become the next Nora Ephron. Stat! We need you.

  1. I'm so with about a lack of great rom coms--everything is so dark now or animated or just silly. One of my personal faves is MUST LOVE DOGS--just a fun movie. If movie makers would just look around, they could find lots of great stories--Lani Diane Rich, Jenny Cruisie, etc. There are some great ones out there.

    1. Totally agree! If only...I think another problem is that the women who played those parts do a few and then "move" onto more serious roles. It's too bad they don't appreciate the rom-com for the enjoyable escape they provide us :)

  2. great post, Margie! And I love a good rom-com...for a while I thought Kate Hudson and Matthew Mcconaughy would be the next on-screen-it couple..alas, the 2 movies they gave us were great but I want another! I really liked Crazy, Stupid, Love (2011) ... and if you haven't seen What If (with Daniel Radcliffe) check it out - I loved that one.

    1. I do love Crazy, Stupid, Love and I really enjoyed What If. BUT, it's hard to crush on Daniel Radcliffe without feeling a little pervy about it. LOL

  3. Margie - great post! Wish I could offer some suggestions, but I have small children who fall to the floor and declare "Ewwwwww!" if it's not an animated film or The Avengers 😉

  4. Great post. I can't believe Shall We Dance wasn't on your list (okay, I'm old). It's my favorite!

    1. Well, I didn't give a complete list :) And almost anything with Richard Gere could garner my vote. The Second Best Marigold Hotel?? That's a good one.

  5. I love romantic comedies so much that I ended up writing two -- it would be nice to see more movies like that come around again.
