Writing Characters

You know, I'm kind of scattered right now. I'm going to blame the fact that I just spent four days on the road with Liz at a writer's conference. I'm still in that hazy post-conference place where I'm full of ideas, trying to sort through all the information I learned, and remember all the people I met and frankly, unpack and do laundry. However, I had a ball--I always do when I travel with Liz and the conference was fun. Some new and interesting developments came out of Spring Fling for me, but until I know more about how it's all going to affect my life as a writer, I'll keep it under my hat. I promise when I know anything, I'll share.

So, I’m not really a writer who finds character inspiration in actors. I don’t go looking for pictures of actors to play the roles in my novels. However, I was watching a movie the other night (absorbing narrative–it’s a good thing!), and in a moment of unusual inspiration for me, one of the actors was my Tony Reynard–the hero of Book 5 of the Women of Willow Bay series. Book 5 is currently under construction . . . it’s Sarah Everett’s story.

Remember Sarah from Sex and the Widow Miles? She ran the consignment shop La Belle Femme at the Chicago women’s shelter where Julie volunteered. Well, for reasons you’ll soon learn, Sarah’s moving to Willow Bay. And Tony–the captain of Liam’s yacht, who moved to Willow Bay after Liam and Carrie got married–well, he’s a deputy sheriff now and he’s painting houses . . . and  he and Sarah are about to meet . . . Yeah, it’s Jeffery Dean Morgan . . .a big gentle bear of a guy . . . I know, another beta hero. So sue me, I just can't write an alpha--I try. I plan alpha heroes, but somehow, they always turn into the sweet, lovable men I'm surrounded by in my own life.

Today's question for you, dear wranglers? Do you write alpha or beta heroes and why? Discuss . . .

  1. My guys are mostly beta, but with alpha tendencies...or so I've been told. I love an alpha, though, as long as he doesn't stray into alpha-hole territory. :)

  2. Even though most alphas redeem their "alpha-hole"ness by the end of a story, I still want to choke them. I prefer strong men, but not overbearing ones. So I'm with you on the Beta Hero, Nan!

    1. Yeah, you're surrounded by betas in your life, too, Liz. I guess we write what we know, don't we?

  5. I'm all for the beta type guy who surprisingly pulls off an alpha heroic and saves the heroine or who works as an equal with the heroine to save the day.

  6. I was once told that my alpha males weren't alpha enough. My response was, "That's because they're betas." So yeah. Betas all the way!
