Bingeing . . .and It's Not Food

Are you a TV watcher? If you asked me, I would swear to you that I am not into TV at all, that I never watch it, which, frankly, would be a bit of an exaggeration. Never isn’t entirely true, but we do have the least expensive cable package you can get and still have cable TV, and up at the lake, we don’t even have a TV. Well, we do have a small one, but it’s not hooked up and it’s in the guest room. Someone gave it to us a couple of years ago, which was very kind of them. We took it to watch movies on a rainy day, but we both have Kindles and when it rains, we read. . .  or watch Netflix. We turned the TV on once to see if it worked (it did) and haven’t turned it on since—that was three years ago.

Anyway, my point is I don’t watch a lot of television and I don’t watch network television at all. I watch PBS—Downton Abbey, Call the Midwife, Doc Martin—and my DVDs of the Gilmore Girls, which I put on when I’m on the treadmill. But then there's Netflix--amazing Netflix, which can be anything from old movies to documentaries to Netflix original programming, and best of all, it’s available anywhere I have a wireless connection. Which brings me to binge-watching television—Netflix does that to me. Last summer, I binge-watched Grey’s Anatomy—11 seasons. And over the winter, I binge-watched Grace and Frankie, and now this summer, I’m completely hooked on Scandal. It’s so easy to do with Netflix and my Kindle.

I have to say that Scandal is a fast-paced, fascinating show with great character development and twists and turns that surprise the heck out of you. The other day, I sat down, promising myself I’d watch one episode and ended up watching four! It's a Shonda Rhimes production--the same person who did Grey's Anatomy--and man, the woman can tell a story. And not that I don't sometimes get mad at the characters or think I'm ready for one or more of them to disappear--I do! But mostly, I'm engaged and interested and what more can a writer/producer ask than that? No doubt I'll find another series to binge on come colder weather and cozy nights cuddled up by the fire. But for now, Scandal is keeping me plenty occupied. No judging, okay?

So here are the questions for today: Do you/have you ever binge-watched a television series? If so, which one? What made it binge-worthy? Oh, and as long as we're at it . . . any recommendations for my winter binge?

  1. As we don't HAVE Netflix and we DO have 250 TV channels with nothing on them, I still don't watch much, but I do binge The West Wing and the Anne of Green Gables movies and I watch Hallmark Christmas movies all the way through the holidays while I sew.

    1. Honestly, even with Netflix, my watching time still includes Anne and Foyle's War and Gilmore Girls and Downton Abbey while I walk on the treadmill, so maybe this isn't all that different. Thanks, Liz!!

  2. I like bingeing on my faves (like The West Wing), but I recently found Reign (Mary, Queen of Scots, fictionalized) and love it...and we binged on the first 2 seasons of Orange is the New Black last summer (season 3 got...weird and we stopped). Good luck finding your next binge!

    1. I seriously need to look into The West Wing. I loved Sorken's HBO series The Newsroom. If you haven't seen it yet, I highly recommend it. ;-)

  3. I'm currently bingeing on Murdoch Mysteries. Waiting for the last season of Hell on Wheels. I know I could find the same shows on regular TV, but I keep odd hours and the rest of the family doesn't like my choices.
