When life was slow and oh, so mellow...

"...when life was slow and oh, so mellow..." - Harvey Schmidt

Welcome to October! And, yeah, I'm a month off with my quote up there, but it fits so well. Someone said on Facebook, "October is my favorite color." I tend to agree. Regardless of how brilliant its colors are both here in the Midwest and in New England--and probably other places; I am literally "writing what I know" here--there is a mellowness to October that, if we let it, will lend ease to the most pained of hearts.

In my best Pollyanna Whittier mode, and because you know I do like my lists, I'm going to talk about my favorite things about October. You know how the rest of it goes then--you tell us your favorite things about October. Or your least favorites, whichever strikes your fancy.

So, just a minute while I sweeten my Pumpkin Spice tea--yes, really, it's from Bigelow and it's really good--I'll give my list some thought...

  • Pumpkin spice everything. I know it's a love-or-hate thing. Cheryl St. John came right out on FB and admitted she hated it all. Answers to her post ranged from avid agreement to--I might be making this up--questioning her taste buds' competence. (She has this book about cake-baking that assures me she knows about food...)
  • Autumn decorations. Not that I have many, but aren't they gorgeous? Here in the cornfields, we see many of the decorations in their natural habitat. Cornstalks, bales of straw, pumpkins, and leaves of all colors. The nice thing is we also get to hear them rustle, smell the grainy-sweet smell peculiar to fall, and drink cider straight out of the press. (I like mine hot. And spiced. See recipe here.)
  • Sweatshirts. I LOVE sweatshirts. And I want'em baggy. I have a lime green one that makes my sister-in-law Lynn want to toss her cookies, but I love it anyway. (I need to add here that if I buy her anything, it's either gray or...no, maybe...no, gray...)
  • October is the start of the holiday season for me. Not that I'm organized to ever actually be ready for any of the holidays, but I do love the whole anticipatory time.
  • I've sold several books in October and had several more come out in October. This year is no exception. Catch Miracle on Joyful Street as part of this year's Christmas Town anthology, Heartwarming Holiday Wishes.

There's my list. How about you? How do you feel about October?

Have a great week!

Liz

  1. Great list! I love pumpkin spice... in moderation. It’s like Christmas: if we had it all year it wouldn’t be as special. I love October for the kiddos’ Fall Break, which usually means a trip to Disney World! And, of course, spiced pumpkin seeds (although gutting the pumpkin is less than favorite)!

    1. Got to admit, gutting the pumpkin would make it a "no" for me. Disney is a great thing to look forward to!

  2. October and I have a love/hate relationship. I love it when it's cooler (sweater/jeans weather), and hate it when Winter jumps the gun and dumps snow on us. Just not ready to wear a heavy coat until December....

My taste buds reject anything pumpkin spice, but last night, my Irish Cream creamer was nowhere to be found, so I guess it's officially 'holiday' season, since I'm now using Frosted Sugar Cookie, lol!

My sister's birthday and Halloween in the same month is pretty darn special also!

    1. One of my brothers' birthdays is in October, too. I sold my first book on that day, so every year since I tell him he's slipping. I love the coolness--don't even mind cold--but the wind and rain drive me right to the edge. I know we need some rain now, but I'm loving not having it. I like Irish Cream anything, but in October, it's pumpkin spice all the way! :-)

  3. I love October - from the crispness of early morning (you know, when I manage to get up early in the morning) to the crunch of leaves under my feet.

    1. Me, too, Kristi...except for that wind and rain I mentioned up there, which hasn't happened yet. :-)

  4. Um, you already know how I feel about the whole pumpkin spice thing, so I won't go there, but otherwise, I'm a huge October fan! We always go down to a state park here Indiana and meet some lake buddies for a day of campfires and hiking, which pretty much covers me for the "camping" thing for a whole year. ;-)

  5. Here in Canada we have Thanksgiving in October so that's always nice. It's often a time to get together with family. My brother's birthday is in October also, which reminds me I need to call him. October is nice and I don't mind the cooler temperatures, but it reminds me that winter is on the way. Sorry to be a Debbie Downer!

    1. There is that...but even though winter is my least favorite on the seasons chart, I don't hate it, either...at last until January. I think the first three months of the year last longer than the last nine all together!

  6. I love October from the crispness in the air, in the colors, to the arrival of the new tv season, holiday books, leaves on the ground, and rain washing away the dead in my yard.

    1. There's a lot to love. It's really warm here this week, but breezy, and the leaves are rustling big time. Bliss!

  7. October (and fall) is my favorite time of year. I love weather than is cool enough for sweaters, or sweatshirts. I like pumpkin spice, in moderation, but it is way overdone.

    1. Oh, I know it's overdone, and I'm an enabler! Thanks for stopping by, Carolyn.
