A Step Forward

When I was a kid, not all that long ago (cough cough) my favorite shows were the stop animation ones…Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer, Santa Claus is Coming to Town. Ok, basically any Christmas show would do.

But in Santa Claus is coming to town, mean old Winter Warlock scared the bejeebers out of me. Scary!! Until Winter melted and just became an ordinary man, he was frozen in place. Stuck. Once he melted, he had to learn how to walk again, as he no longer had magic powers. I’ve been stuck. Frozen.

Put one foot in front of the other
And soon you’ll be walking cross the floor
Put one foot in front of the other
And soon you’ll be walking out the door!

So, yesterday I unfroze myself and sent out my synopsis.

Put one foot in front of the other.

I’d been working on it for two weeks, changing, altering, lengthening, shortening, stressing – until finally – BAM! Today’s the day.

I posted it on my blog first, that today was the day.

I didn’t even have it done yet.

No problem, I’d committed myself, I was just going to suck it up and do it.

And soon you’ll be walking cross the floor….

So, I did. There’s parts I don’t care for at all, the Fig Newton line, the character arc could be stronger, the writing more Wow! Read This! and less How to Assemble a Synopsis in Twelve Easy Steps.

Put one foot in front of the other…

And then came the scariest part. Sending it off. Oh, it’s all fine and dandy when it’s sitting on your computer, lurking in the background, calling you names. But you just try to attach it to an email. See if your mouse hand doesn’t quiver just a tiny bit. See if a little dribble of sweat doesn’t work its way down your brow. See if you don’t take a big swallow of (insert liquor/wine/beverage of your choice here) before you hit that big, bad SEND button.

And soon you’ll be walking out the door!

And with that monumental clicking of the send button, my synopsis was air-borne. No calling it back, no saying do-over! It’s done, and within seconds it was sitting in someone else’s mailbox. Lurking. Waiting.

And me? Well, I’ve just taken my first major step towards being a romance writer. Gulp.

=)

Put one foot in front of the other
And soon you’ll be walking cross the floor
Put one foot in front of the other
And soon you’ll be walking out the door

You never will get where you’re going
If you never get up on your feet
Come on, there’s a good tail wind blowing
A fast walking man is hard to beat

Put one foot in front of the other
And soon you’ll be walking cross the floor
Put one foot in front of the other
And soon you’ll be walking out the door

If you want to change your direction
If your time of life is at hand
Well don’t be the rule be the exception
A good way to start is to stand

Put one foot in front of the other
And soon you’ll be walking cross the floor
Put one foot in front of the other
And soon you’ll be walking out the door

If I want to change the reflection
I see in the mirror each morn
You mean that it's just my election
To vote for a chance to be reborn

  1. Yaaaaay, Carried! Glad you sent it out...now go have an adult beverage (I don't care that it's barely 10am) and relax. For 10 minutes...then get back to work, k?

  4. Great post, and one of my very favorite shows. I've been known to watch it in July. Just because.
