Nothing's Fun All the Time

This week we're talking about the best and worst advice we ever got. I've gotten two good pieces of advice. The first was from my brother who told me to treat writing like my primary career. The day job is what I do on the side.

The second was from my husband. I was vegging on he couch, letting the idiot box turn my brain to mush when he said, "Don't you have something you should be doing?" When I said no, he pointed to my office and said, "Get in there and write." It was good advice. Once I get my butt in the chair, I can pull a pretty good marathon.

The worst advice. "If you're not having fun, quit." I'm glad I ignored that one. Nothing is fun all the time. If I quit something the minute it wasn't fun anymore, I'd be single, childless, jobless, and homeless.

Following the advice of hubby and my brother has made me a happier, more productive writer. And I'm grateful to both of them.

  1. Those were good pieces of advice, although I'm also a fan of the "if you're not having fun, quit" school on things you're not depending on to feed you, love you, or keep you warm. :-)

    Great post, Shawn.

  3. Thanks for stopping in, Liz and Kristi. I'm only a fan of quitting if you're NEVER having fun. I have my fun and not so fun writing days. And yes, I am lucky to have a great, supportive family.

  4. Nice advice!

My husband got over my writing a long time ago. My daughter is suportive, though, so that's good.

  5. My husband's been waiting over 27 years for me to published and he's still supportive. If I say I have to write, he's so great about it.Of course, he's seen how tense I get if I don't get to create, so it may be more about his own self-preservation :)
