Bringing Sexy Back

What's sexy to you?  I've talked many times about a steady kind of love that my husband brings...fixing things, shoeing horses, hauling hay, working out of state.

But today, I'm more interested in talking about our heroes.  Romance heroes. As everyone knows, my personal faves are cowboys.

I love ranching cowboys, and have written several. But rodeo cowboys are a whole other animal.  There's something about a guy who straps himself to a two-ton animal bent on tossing him off that makes my blood run a little hotter.

The daredevil aspect?  Maybe. Is a guy who gets on a bull brave, or dumber than dirt? Either way, I find him incredibly sexy.

I would like to hear from you....what is about your particular hero that makes him so appealing.  Feel free to put up an excerpt.

  1. I love men of law enforcement. There is something about a man who would risk his own life to protect the woman he loves.

  2. Looks are a given but the personality trait Hands down -- CONFIDENCE. IT's the key ingredient for sexiness. You know the kind - where the guy leans over the pool table and lines up his shot. He shoots you a smile, maybe a wink, and knocks the ball in without even looking. Whew!

  3. I don't really think it's a certain profession that I find sexy...it's the entire package. They have to have the attitude and then the rest just falls into place...and I have to admit that I like some humor thrown in as well...to me that's sexy :)

  4. This question stopped me in my tracks, and I had to think. The pictures of the guys we post a lot are very hot, but to be sexy for more than just a few minutes, takes much more. Quite frankly, my husband is still the sexiest man I've ever met. He's tall (6'4") broad shouldered, dark hair, blue eyes, fixes stuff, took care of the kid. But he also has a picture of me naked (taken last year) on his phone and computer, and he tells me I'm the most beautiful woman he knows.

  5. In the movies, I think astronauts are sexy. You know when you see them walk toward the ship, all in a line, in their orange jumpsuits, and you know they are going into space? Think Armageddon or Apollo 13. Maybe it's because they always walk with purpose, confidence, and in slow motion. LOL

But in books, I think it comes down to character, not profession.

  6. I agree with everything written above! LOL. All those guys are sexy. I also really like firemen, and would love to write a story about smoke jumpers (with, of course, tons of research beforehand). Also have had a rodeo story brewing for ages, but again feel like I'd need to do mega research first.

And I have to confess, I've got a little bit of a thing for guys with glasses. Dunno why... even if they're just reading glasses he takes off and then levels the h with a sexy stare. yum. Nerds are totally okay too... While I go for a sexy guy with confidence every time, a kinda dorky guy who doesn't know he's sexy? Double yum. LOL

Dang. I'm starting to sound like a hormone factory.
    Back to work I go!

  7. The hero of DEATH LEGACY, my romantic suspense mystery thriller, is a sexy New York psychiatrist. He becomes involved with a woman who does a special kind of consulting and he helps her with a case involving them both in danger and international intrigue.

For me, a man needs confidence, sexy hands/legs, an awesome laugh and the ability to surprise me. :)

  12. I like a man with strong hands - carefully manicured hands are a big turn-off. Whether he does it for a living or not, he has to look like those hands could work hard if they had to. Eyes are important too - the color is not important but they should be expressive.I don't care if he's tall or not and wonder why that is such an important physical trait - make him tall and he's automatically sexy? Uh, no. Not for me anyway.

  13. Confidence is A #1 in my book. Though I married a handsome man, looks weren't important to me. I had dated frogs and geeks, and as long as they were confident - I was satisfied.

I'm not much into rough stock cowboys. Not speaking for ALL of them, but there's a reason they don't anything besides a vehicle and their rigging.

  14. My idea of a sexy hero is the one who loses himself in the woman he's with. The man who does the unexpected to show he loves her. In this excerpt, my hardened mercenary who never shows his emotions, acts spontaneously and it completely throws my heroine for a loop:

“Alana, you know those women are soulless and vain. Why would you be upset over what they think? They don’t know you. They have no idea what led you here. What you’ve been through.”
She looked at him. “They don’t, do they?” Blowing out a long breath she leaned her head back against the wall. “I wouldn’t have even these clothes if it weren’t for the generosity of Sam’s foreman’s wife. I lost perspective. Thank you.”
He held the clothes aside and leaned in close so their lips were inches apart. “I didn’t mean it that way.”
    “You didn’t?” she murmured.
“No. You have no idea how beautiful you are, do you?”
She swallowed, unaccustomed to hearing such tender words from him. Unable to speak, she shook her head.
He growled low in his throat and ground his lips down on hers. It wasn’t the romantic kiss to fit his words, but she would take it. Anything Cristian wanted to give her, she would take. Somehow, this man grounded her. Made her feel she could conquer the world. Like she would make it through this with minimal scarring. She reached for him.
The doors opened. Cristian pulled away, standing back so she could exit.
With a tiny smile she hurried off the elevator.

    Thanks, D'Ann! That was fun!

  15. My current hero has the enigmatic quality of being non-corporeal - wow - did I just write that? He's a voice - but a sexy voice.

No snippet today - I'm in a bit of a hurry.

  16. I love a hero who adores a woman with all her imperfections. Especially a witty duke.

  17. Smart is sexy to me. I suppose I like geeky guys (though I still like the cowboy look). I want someone who wouldn't hesitate to fight for good and honor, but he'd probably break something in the process then pass out when he saw the needle in the ER.

  18. I can't resist an in-shape man with perhaps a few tattos on his forearm and maybe even a shaved head. *Fanning myself* oh, and I love cowboys and cops. I think it's the strength and perception of control.

  19. I agree with all of you ladies. To be honest, I'm not too picky..as long as he's not an arse or something, I like most of them. :) Cowboys, Highlanders, military men, Dukes, the stray crime boss, geeky nerds, the tortured types in need of TLC, shifters, vamps, gods, mythical creatures.. meh, I'll take them all. :D

  20. Humor. A quick wit will get me every single time.

  21. A hero to me is a man with honor and compassion. He's brave and storng and will never give up. He fights for what's right and believes in the underdog.

Two of the favorite heroes that I've written...

Ian McHenry (A HUNTER'S ANGEL--available 7/20)---He's a vampire who is a vampire hunter. His human cover is being an FBI special agent who specializes in hunting down serial killers.

Dylan Quinn (GAMBLING ON A SECRET---available 1/2013)---He's a former Special Forces officer who blames himself for his Delta Team's losses on a mission that helped SEAL Team 6. He's now has PTSD. But he sees danger for the heroine where she's too blind to see and is determined to save her ranch, even if she doesn't realize she's in danger of losing it. (He's a cowboy former soldier which is really my favorite type of hero).

  23. Sorry I'm a day late, but thought I'd add my 2 cents worth anyway. :)

Despite the fact that I write historicals, when I think sexy, I think James Bond (or the young Sean Connery as James Bond)--handsome, charming, confident, witty, intelligent. The whole package equaled sexy to me. :)
