My Favorite Holiday!

We're talking about favorite things this week at WordWranglers. So I had to join in with my favorite holiday. Now, for many people, Christmas or Valentine's Day are favorites. Nothing against those particular days - they're among my favorite holidays - but for me the best holiday is the Fourth of July. America's Independence Day.

What do I love about the 4th of July? I like that it's not cold - cold does have its place but give me a warm (okay, HOT) holiday any time. Heat makes holiday, for me. I love that we're all joining in the same celebration and that many of us have similar memories - family, picnics, watermelon, 'writing' our names with sparklers in the air.

For my family specifically: I love waiting until dusk and driving to the park to watch the fireworks show. I love the explosion of light in the night sky and going for ice cream after because we're all so hot from the show we need to cool down fast. I love the gasps and giggles from bebe as she watches the different fireworks. Nothing is sweeter than watermelon on the 4th and reaching into a cooler filled with ice and popping the top on an ice cold Coca-Cola? That gives me happy sighs all over.

So, on this 4th of July, I'm wishing all of you - even those of you outside the US - a happy, relaxing day. I hope you're spending it with people you love.

  1. My favorite is still Christmas, but I like the 4th, too, for all the reasons you listed and because I am--all strife aside--so happy to be an American.

  2. Columbus day.

I used to get the day off and since it's so close to my birthday - it was my own personal holiday.

  3. When Jordan was in fifth grade, during the first week of school, they had to fill out an info sheet including their favorite holiday. She put down Martin Luther King's Birthday. Her teacher had to have looked at that and thought, "But she's not even black." or what a civically minded family Jordan came from. Actually, Jordan's birthday is January 15--the same day as Martin Luther King's.

I'd have to go with Christmas, although retail really sucks the holiday spirit out of everything because we get the holiday stuff in months ahead of time and by the time the holiday comes around, you're more or less exhausted with it. What I love about Christmas though is, are the bazaars every Saturday in November and looking for just the right present for my favorite people.

In the Pacific Northwest, July 4th marks the beginning of our summer. You all had that back on Memorial Day, but for us, we know the sun is coming once July hits. Although it's looking a little debateable this morning.

  4. My favorite holiday is Thanksgiving. My husband always seems to have to work 4th of July, and this year is way too darn hot. We've had temperatures over 100 every day for like 2 week--with no rain. Major suckage!

  5. My favorite is Halloween. I've always loved goblins and ghouls (so why don't I write horror?)and the costumes are wonderful to see! When our girls were small we decorated our house to within an inch of its life. LOL

  6. My favorite is Chirstmas... I know, how lame and cliched...

But I really love all holidays, so it was actually a decision of which one do I love the most. It's like picking out which one of your stories do you love the most--or which child...LOL

Happy 4th to you too, Kristi!

  7. I have always loved the 4th of July! It's not my fave, Christmas is, but it's such a great day. I just love the fireworks, picnics and all the Americanism. Great post!

  8. My favorite used to be Christmas, but now that the kids are grown, it's not as much fun as it used to be. Thanksgiving has become my favorite. Actually, I like the day after more because all the kids and grands come over and decorate the tree. It's been a tradition here for years.

  9. My favorite holiday is New Years. It marks the start of a new beginning. A time to wipe the slate clean and start over. A do-over of what wasn't accomplished the year before.

  10. I love Christmas. When I was a child it meant that one of my grandmothers would be visiting us. Then once I had a family of my own, I could carry over some of the fun traditions to my son. Even though he is now a teenager, he still looks forward to setting up Santa's village and the tangerine in the stocking.

    1. The traditions of Christmas are the best part, I think. Forget the presents, give me a day spent decorating the tree, baking cookies and all the rest!
