What do you love to write?

You know, I love writing romance. Even more, I love writing (and reading!) women’s fiction. The fact that I’m published in romantic fiction thrills me as much now as it did 13 years ago when my first book came out. (Always Annie—long out of print but you can still find it.)
But I have a little secret. My favorite thing to write is an essay. Just a little 400-1200 piece on whatever captures my interest in the moment. I wrote a newspaper column for years, which I loved, but when my home paper decided I should work for free, that put an end to it. I’m pretty sure when I quit writing “Window Over the Sink,” it hurt me more than it did the Peru Tribune, but sometimes you have to stand up. I stood up.
However, I’ve started putting essays on my own website. http://www.lizflaherty.com/blog/ I tell you this for a few reasons--none of them to lead you away from Word Wranglers. First, I do hope you stop by and see me. (Oh, and comment—I love comments!) Second, if you like writing essays, I’d love to have you guest on my blog. I’d prefer the subject matter not be writing—we’ll welcome you to the Wranglers for that!—but you can write about anything you choose. It’s gotta be PG-13, but that’s the only “rule.” Third, to ask you this question: what do you love to write most?

  1. I confess...I love writing my blog posts best. If there was a way to make any money doing that, I'd so give up my day job and just blog all day long. Even if I'm exhausted and tired from editing, I can still usually do a blog. I do love writing the novels, too, though. Falling into the world that I've created, becoming the characters, getting into their heads...that part can't be beat either.

  2. I love blogging, too. Such fun. (And I'd love to guest post on your blog, too!) I really enjoy writing novels, but the best part of writing a novel is writing the first draft of the last three chapters where everything winds up. It's the best feeling!

  4. My books are my favorite thing to write - getting to know the characters, telling their stories...it's such a cool feeling! I also like writing poetry, unfortunately it's really, truly, horribly bad poetry...which is why is resides under my bed in a notebook.

    1. Ah, yes...under the bed. Writers can't have dust bunnies, can they? There's no room!

  5. I like blogging, more than anything I like writing multi-plot books with happy endings.

  6. Hi Liz!
I still love to write the longer stuff - women's fiction with strong romantic elements, but I certainly enjoy writing blogs (we have to in this biz so may as well enjoy it, right?)

thanks! Loved your first book cover. :)

  7. I've read a few of your essays, and I really love them. But I don't like to write them. I'm not good at them.

    1. Thanks, D'Ann. I'm better with short, and my favorite essays are just that.

  8. I'm out of practice. Haven't written an essay in years. I'm more of a short-novel- but-too-long-to-be-a-novella type.

    1. OH, me, too, and I wish a publisher would invite me to do a novella--I'm sure I'd like it. Not necessarily be good at, but like it!

  9. I love to write! I find it a challenge to try to write a little of everything. I especially love to write romantic fiction - poems, short stories, etc. Though I like trying my hand at essays, too!
