Pulling Strings

Over the past couple of days, I had the pleasure to read Gennifer Albin's premiere book, Crewel. I don't normally do book reviews --except maybe a paragraph or two on Goodreads--when I remember to update my lists.

And you're not going to get much more than that about Crewel today either. Two thumbs way up. Loved this story. Loved Genn's world-building and can't wait for the next one. That's the trouble with reading the first book in a series when it premieres--you have to wait so,so, sooo long for the second book.

Why I'm talking about it here though, is how it related to what I'm going through with my edits and rewrites of Bix.

From Goodreads, here is part of the description of Crewel:

Gifted with the ability to weave time with matter, she’s exactly what the Guild is looking for, and in the world of Arras, being chosen as a Spinster is everything a girl could want. It means privilege, eternal beauty, and being something other than a secretary. It also means the power to embroider the very fabric of life. But if controlling what people eat, where they live and how many children they have is the price of having it all, Adelice isn’t interested.

See, the Spinsters of Arras not only have the power to weave lives, they have the power to pull strings and erase people from existence. See, that's where I'm at--erasing characters in my book. Deleting scenes that don't serve to further the plot or character.

And while I was reading Crewel, I thought about the comparison. How I can pull one string and see the vibrations as it resettles my book. By cutting out a character of a scene--I have to follow that string and fix my world yet again, nipping even more strings or creating new ones that connect the pre-story to the present story.

Yesterday while driving and thinking, I came up with another scene to cut and I have to follow its strings as well to make sure I don't leave any danglers. But, I guess that's just another part  of writing.

In closing, I highly recommend checking out Crewel. One of the best Dystopians I've read in a long time. Yay Gennifer! Hurry the second one out!

  3. Love the cover! Not really my cuppa, but that's what makes the world so great, we can all find what we love, right???
