The Freedom to Dream

What do you see in this picture? I see a bird flying at the bottom right of the moon. So what, you ask. It's kind of blurry and not very distinct.

But for me, that's the beauty of the picture. That it is kind of fuzzy. It gives my imagination room to run. I can decide if that's an eagle, a dove, or a dragon. And if I let my imagination go, I can think of all kinds of stories.

I could come up with half a dozen without even trying...

1. It's a giant eagle that guards a kingdom.

2. It's a shape-shifter, a hero in his bird form.

3. It's a princess trapped in bird form until her prince frees her.

4. It's a bird sent from a trapped princess to find her prince.

5. It's a dragon.

6. It's a Pegasus.

With each one of these thoughts, I could build an entire story. Complete GMCs, story acrs. A beginning, middle and end. The imagination of a writer or a dreamer is wonderful thing. Could you live if you couldn't dream? I don't think I could.

I'm curious, what do you see here, and where does it lead you?

  2. I see something more like a dolphin. My day dreams are very helpful. This morning, they gave me the start of my next book.

  3. I can do the same thing from just hearing a snippet of conversation too! I love it!

As for your picture, for some reason it reminds me of a stormy night, a broken down car on a deserted road, and an afraid of the dark heroine with no cell phone.

  4. I see a fire breathing beast looking out of the dark at the Earth. The moon is its giant eye. It's looking down from the heavens at us, planning it's destruction.

  5. Cool post and cool idea. Being imagination-challenged, I see..the moon. At first, I thought, geez I can't write that down, but then realized I could hear music: Bob Seger's "Shame on the Moon," which I love and haven't heard in years. Thanks, D'Ann!

  6. Brenda and I think alike. I saw the eye of a dragon just waking up from a long sleep. Everybody who knows me knows I'm a dreamer. Without them, I couldn't write. Or keep my sanity.

I remember a post you did a long time ago about dreaming. I love the dragon's eye.

  7. I see possibilities - a stormy night...a moon rising over destruction or leading 2 star-crossed lovers into forever...I dream all the time. Like Shawn, the dreams keep me sane!

  8. I see a storm coming to change the lives of those caught out in it. Or the hearlding of a mage or a full moon breaking forth to wake the wolves. Dreams are so fun.

  9. It's a beautiful August night and I'm looking up at the pale moon from beneath a tree in my own little world, plotting out my next book.

  12. I see a hawk flying with majesty. But if I was writing a horror story, it would be a vampire flying across the face of a full moon.

  13. It is a picture for stirring the imagination. And I'm glad we live in a country where we are free to write about and/or act on those dreams----for now.

  14. I see the light of the full moon with all it's promise and mystery. Just like last night, in fact :) I think a life without dreams would be a very poor one indeed. Nice post, D'Ann!
