It's Cold Outside!!!

We've had an unusually warm fall here in SW Colorado. Up until a few days ago, I've been feeding the animals in my shirtsleeves.

But, alas, winter has arrived. Even Cataleena is bundling up in her scarf! Brrrr.....!

I'm a warm weather person. I like to garden, to ride in the mountains. I like to wear shorts, and even though I shouldn't, I like to get a tan. Skiing and snow sports hold no appeal for me, even though I live close to three world-class resorts.

I hate winter. Breaking ice tops the reasons. Yes, there are tank heaters, but I was shocked badly once when I was young, and I don't trust my horses, dogs or ducks not to electrocute themselves. Gloves and heavy coats, ugh! The short days and long, cold nights. Double ugh. I just don't care for any of it. I also have SADD, meaning I need sun, and a lot of it, to feel really good.

Right now, just before Christmas, it's crazy. I work retail, so have picked up extra hours that keep me jumping. I have several projects, all calling my name. Two edits on books releasing in the spring, a partial for a pitch that I hope goes well, and two other stories, both vying for my attention.

After the New Year, I'll be able to focus on them.My job will slow down and we'll be in a feeding routine by then. The only good thing about the long, cold, dark days is the time to work inside. I can focus on the stories because there is so much less outside distracting me.

Still, I prefer summer! How about you, when are you most productive?

    1. I might enjoy winter more if I liked winter sports!

  2. I tend to write more at night. I am not a big fan of winter myself, and find it odd that I do a lot of writing when I come down with colds.

  3. I hate winter! The last couple days have been the coldest since we reached fall. It's awful. No snow yet, although my husband keeps wanting it because he plows for the state, but I'm dreading it.

I want shorts, flip flops, weather for walking, and yep, me too, the tan. Hunkering around a heater is not my idea of a good time. And I feel more productive in the spring and summer. Winter just makes me sleepy.

  4. I shouldn't complain about our winters here on the Central Coast of California. It doesn't snow where I live, but we'll reach freezing at night. Both of my kids are wearing shorts and t-shirts to school today, and the sun is shining with no clouds in the sky. But I'm a warm weather person, too. I'll snow ski, but prefer to waterski. I've never had the opportunity to try ice skating, but roller blading at the beach in Santa Barbara is GREAT!

I like visiting the snow, but wouldn't want to live in it. I'll take my warm winters.

  5. I love winter - but primarily because I don't have to deal with it. Since I'm self-employed and have a very over-protective husband, the worst icy/snowy days he does the pre-school runs and what-not. Leaving me to bask in the warmth of central heating. So I get a LOT done in the winter months - as long as its sunny. Grey days are bleh for me. Still, I prefer summer for the flip-flop factor.

  6. I use to like all seasons, but not so much anymore.
I live on the southern tip of Vancouver island--Canada--so I don't see much snow, but we get a tremendous amount of rain and gray, gross days. The older I get, the more I hate winter. It's such a pain and everything looks so ugly. I miss my gardens, the horses with their sleek, summer coats, the long days, the warm evenings spent sitting out on the deck...

  7. I used to like winter, back when I attended kindergarten south of Chicago. I could deal with the snow, ice, enjoyed skating on our homemade, backyard ice rink. But that was years and decades ago. I like the heat of summer. Sunshine, pools and women in tinie weenie bikinis.

Snow, where I live now, only conjurers up images of car wrecks, falling branches and power outages.

My wife is also affected by SADD. We combat it by using full spectrum lights in the lamps and overhead lights, or by getting her out of the house during the day.

As far as when am I most productive in writing? Morning time. I can turn off the situational awareness radar, put on my music and zone out while plotting out the demise of the bad guy, or detailing a hot sex scene.

    1. I'm so not a morning person. I like night to write, but it's hard to get up in the a.m.!

  8. There are good things about all seasons--and bad as well. I like the outdoors and taking long walks. But winter will provide me with extra writing time.

  9. There are things I like and dislike about all the seasons. In summer I love the long days, but hate the humidity (if it's humid), in winter I love the falling snow, but don't like the wind and driving icy roads, I love Fall because of the colors, but don't like the fact that I always seem to have so much more to get done and Spring is full of newness, but I don't like the chore of cleaning up the yard. Once it's cleaned up I'm good, but the initial phase isn't a favorite of mine. As for being most productive, it comes in spurts no matter the season :)

  10. I'm like Kristi--as long as it's sunny, I'm productive. I don't mind the cold, though I don't like wind, and I like some snow here and there. It's different now, though, than when I was working and had to really cope with the elements. Now I just look at them!

  11. I'm like you I prefer the sun and warm weather. I hate the cold weather. I can picture sitting on my patio when I get it squared away and writing next spring. I have to empty a storage unit to delete a bill. I decided the double recliner will be perfect for now to hang out there when the weather permits. Of course here in Texas the summer is often over 100 degrees and I'm not a swimmer or much of a yard person. The yard was the hubby's thing. I hate dealing with it. I'm basically lazy love spending all my time on the computer. I spent 20+ years in retail so I understand the extra hours and work there. I've had a year to evolve from being a wife caring for an ill husband and life mate of 40+ years into being a widow. I'm trying to move on and make things the way I want them to be for me but it is hard to find that path. So D'Ann I am with you sun and warm weather and skip the cold. I'm a night owl so dark mornings are cool to sleep late lol. Have a great week and thanks for a great post.

  12. I'm a beach bum - should have been born in the tropics - not Canada. But it's part of the year and by mid January when it is stupid cold out and we're buried in the snow - we Canadians get all proud of it - and I stare at pictures of palm trees. sigh

  13. I was most productive before I published and marketing became my life. lol.

  14. I love summer too, D'Ann. I love Christmas, but after that I hate it.

  15. Basically ditto what Christine said above.

I'd have to say I like the beginning of every season. I love the freshness of Spring and the flowers beginning to bloom. I love the warmth of Summer. I love the colors of fall and the beginning of rain and wind. Although winter for me is just a continuation of fall--except sometimes more extreme with a little bit of a chill. I love to watch the snow fall but hate when it starts interfering with travel.

  17. I love it when its cool. I have Perimenopause and have hot flashes. My husband and I don't need an electric blanket any more because I heat up the bedroom. This time of the year I steam the windows in the car and we have to use the defroster on a cool setting.

However, this time of the year is when it rains I have join pain, and have to wear my Eliza Doolittle's fingerless gloves to type.

  18. For me it's not the time of year that I'm more productive but the time of day. Once my husband moved to evening shift (3pm-11pm) my productivity rose greatly.

However, like you I'm a summer person. I don't like the extreme heat but I don't like the cold weather either. If I can wear a fleece over my long-sleeve t-shirt I'm a happy camper.

I hear you on the retail thing in December. My husband is complaining that he never sees me. I want to tell him that he's the one who thinks I should work. LOL.

  19. i'm the odd man out, because I love the winter. We don't get it very bad here in Virginia, it's just now turned cold. But I've always loved bundling up and being able to wear sweaters. I love to see snow falling and going out to play in it with my girls. For some reason, I always want to cook when it snows! A pot of chili, corn muffins, cookies. But then I don't have to deal with the reality of feeding outdoor animals. And snow days are few and far between here. I'm most productive in the summer, but that's because I get to stay home between semesters. Christmas break is so busy I don't get very much chance to write. Snow days either, because if I'm off, everyone's off and not letting me write!
