Family Traditions

Margie's post got me thinking about family traditions. I thought I'd share one of mine. The Fourth of July is over, but the weekend has just begun. I love it when holidays run close to the weekend. It means extra days off work for me. My brother, his girlfriend, and my niece flew in for the holiday. And as my family tends to do, we had a big seafood dinner. We don't limit these to just the holidays. Sometimes, we just get a wild hair and decide we're going to boil up some crabs or shrimp, or sometimes both. We pick a house, and it's on. Luckily, my sis and BIL lives right behind me be so it's never a big deal which house it is. We line a table with news paper and the fun begins. If the kids are there, we show them how to open the crabs and toddlers get in their highchairs while all the adults feed them crab meat. In our family, you're brought up on shellfish. So far, no seafood allergies. By the time all the crabs are busted open, and we're sitting there patting our bellies, the table looks like a huge science experiment gone wrong. (See pic) The newspaper gets rolled up with the mess tucked securely inside and we sit around laughing and talking. This is something I remember my family doing since I was five. And now that I'm the adult, a grandma no less, it continues. I love when that happens. What are some of your favorite traditions?

  1. We don't have all that much in the way of traditions, but we have had a couple of seafood Thanksgivings. At the first one, I got squirted from all the way across the table when either a lobster or a crab leg was cracked open. We were all laughing so hard we had to take a break.

    1. Lol Liz! I've been the squirter and the recipient on more than one occasion.

  2. What a fun tradition. Our family always got together with my dad's side of the family on Christmas Eve for a special dinner. It was fun to see everyone and celebrate together. With their passing, my sister has picked up the tradition. Although I haven't been able to get there, I still remember it and have wonderful memories of those days.

    1. Melissa, maybe you can start your own tradition. I'll bet your memories are wonderful.

  3. We draw names for Christmas stockings amongst my sisters, my mom, our husbands, and my daughters. Everyone pitches in for my nephew's. Then we open them, oldest to youngest. It's our favorite part of Christmas. And it all started because my mom said we were too old to get stockings :)

Love your seafest! I'm so jealous and wishing I'd been able to afford to come to RWA and stay with you. After that story I might have insisted on experiencing the tradition first hand :)

  4. Would have loved to have you, Margie. And believe me, having a guest is our favorite reason to break out the crab pots!
