My Name Is...

Sometimes my characters can be a little fickle. Ella, my latest heroine was that way. She drove me crazy. But my current hero and I just had a pretty nice, but short talk.  The hero's name was Allen. I have to admit, I never liked this name for the hero. It just seemed...wrong. I read what was on the pages and heard a deep male chuckle. Then the conversation started. It went like this.

"You got my name wrong." The voice had an accent but I couldn't tell where he was from.

"So what's your name?"

"Dorion Kalivas."

"Where are you from, Dorion?"

"Greece."

"What's your story?"

There was a moment of silence. I thought the conversation was over. Then he said, "Sit down, put your fingers on the keys, and write. My story will come to you."

And it did. Dorion doesn't talk much any more. But the words flow. And the story flows. Sometimes I have to stop remind myself to take a break. And that's a good thing. I never have figured out why Dorion didn't come to me sooner. Maybe he got tired of being put on the back burner. Whatever the reason, I'm glad he made himself known. I wish all of them would be so easy to talk to.

  1. Yes, I also wish they were all easy to talk to, but some are more chatty than others. I like the chatty ones :)

  3. Don't know if it's the characters that are fickle or it's the fact I'm not listening - haha! Maybe a little of both?

I had a character and I knew her name was Annie, but couldn't place her last name so I chose Wolf (I know, unoriginal). But as I was writing her story, the name just didn't fit. Then one day I was attending a Dayton Dragons baseball game and a player came up to bat. "That's my last name," Annie said. And Annie O'Shea was born. I really love it when that happens!

  4. Wouldn't it be great if they all came like that? I think mine usually yell "keep up!" as they're walking away. :-)
