..and whiskers on kittens...

Is that not a cool title for a blog post? And, no, it has nothing to do with anything. I just liked it. In my next life I will have a glorious voice and sing my way through the Alps.
It grieves me to admit this, but I might have the slightest tendency toward being bossy. I shouldn’t really mind this all that much since sometimes it’s necessary to be the yes-right-now decision maker. However, if you knew how much I complained about other people being bossy, you’d know why the realization that I am makes me do a Thumper-like head drop of embarrassment. So, to those I’ve bossed, sorry.
Sometimes, though, good things can come of...well, not
so good. From a conversation following my apology to the other Wranglers, the declaration was made that we were after all princesses; therefore, I needed me a tiara, Kristi was in for boas, Nan waved her arm wanting to bring out her magic wand (I’ve traveled with her—I think she really does carry one, but you didn’t hear that from me), and Margie started designing wings PLUS wants her own wand! It made for a fun morning.

So I thought I’d say something about bosses. And writing.
And why I—and I’ll bet some others among you masses that visit us here—continue to stick with traditional publishing. I have said all along that I don’t “go indie” because I’m lazy and because I’m too old to want to learn new things. And that’s true. But there’s more to it.
I don’t want, in this instance at least, to be my own boss.
Maybe this comes from being an employee my entire working life where, even though coworkers and
I made decisions on a daily basis, the buck didn’t really stop with us. I like doing the work, both then and now, and I like—sometimes—pressure to get it done in a timely manner. Like anyone else, I don’t like it when the boss—in this case the publisher—says No. I’ll argue the point, I’ll say “what if I do this?” and I’ll pout some. But   I’ll go on, and when I win the crapshoot and the boss says Yes, I’m loving it. For me, the writing is the easy part (yes, really); the revising is the fun part (Yes, really, again. You know what the boss wants. It’s great!); and the other stuff I don’t have to worry a lot about are the icing on the cake.
I’m not including promotion in this little Pollyanna saga about having a boss. You all know that doesn’t work anymore.
Back to being bossy. And, yes, I will happily admit this post makes no sense at all, but I’m having fun writing it. So, no I won’t go back to being bossy after all. I’ll go with questions for you. Gee, how unusual is that? just came from the peanut gallery, but Wranglers have nothing if not inquiring minds, so, yeah, we want to know:

1.       Do you want to be the boss or do you like being the employee who just loves her job?

2.       What’s your princess accessory of choice? And don’t anybody say “prince.” We are women—hear us roar.

  1. Fun post! I'm a win-win person, so sometimes I'm a boss and in other instances, I'm an employee. Guess I'm a goose in human's clothing - you know - geese takes turns leading the "vee." Hmm, my accessory of choice? Why do I have to pick just one? As a princess, I choose any and all bling, to be worn however and whenever I choose! (roaring)

  2. I'm with you, Liz. I don't want to be my own boss. At least not yet. I enjoy having someone getting my back, guiding me, keeping me from being a total mess. There's a certain comfort level that would be lost if I was in charge of all things.
Oh, and my princess accessory, big, fat, pink slippers. ; )

    1. Oh, yes, I want slippers, too! And we feel exactly the same way, don't we?

  3. I like to be a bit of both. I enjoy figuring out how all the processes work - which helps me understand how to do things on my side that make it easier down the road for others. But I also like someone at my back, because a lot of these decisions are tough.

Princess accessory - the tiara of course. Although, like Ashantay, anything with bling is good. :)

    1. I enjoy the learning part, but I don't process things all that well anymore, so chances are I'll forget by Friday what I learned on Tuesday! Thanks, Abigail.

  4. Since I'm the resident hybrid, I'll say I enjoy both. Seriously. I like working with cover designers on my self-published books and figuring out file formatting wasn't all that hard. But I wouldn't trade working with my agent or editor for anything in the world. Seriously, again. They both have their strengths and those strengths pull out my own - nothing makes me fly higher than a compliment from one or the other...and if both come at the same time for the same reason...I might just never come down!

As for my princess accessory of choice: I've got the prince and he goes with me everywhere. He's, like, the best arm candy! But a princess just isn't a princess without the tiara so I'll take one of those, too.

    1. I think hybrid must be, truly, the best of both worlds. I haven't exactly thrown that out yet. I'm still re-typing, slowly, the only book I own the rights to. :-)

  5. I know in my heart of hearts, that I am too good (or bad?) of a procrastinator to market myself which is one reason I haven't taken the indie-published route. Plus, I am a person who thrives on compliments. If you tell me I did a good job, I will work my butt off to get a great job or fantastic job. Now, if only I could find a team like Kristi has :)

AS for my accessory, I'll take the magic wand and wings. That way I can float above you all and sprinkle you with pixie dust.

    1. I'm one of those pro- words, too, Margie. Thanks for the pixie dust--I need that today!

  6. I have been my own boss since I started freelance editing in 1993 and it's been hard, but rewarding. When I couldn't get editors interested in my older heroines, I went indie, but I had StoryWonk at my back, so that made it easier, I think.

Accessory of choice is really more fairy godmother than princess--a wand.My sister gave me a picture that hangs in my office and it reads, "I'm fairly certain that given a cape and nice tiara, I could save the world." Yup--I think so... ;-)

    1. I'm on Duane's computer--I'm not really him --and I love that. I didn't notice it when I was there, but it's pretty perfect!
