Fire's Field
Chapter 1 excerpt

Vibrant autumn leaves skittered along the pavement. Mixing with a light mist, they lined the roadsides in clumps of brown and black, yet in the fading evening light, a few glints of red and gold remained. The spicy fragrance of her favorite season filled her senses, and though slightly chilled, she soaked up every nuance.
Shaking wet beads from her hair, Violet Levina scanned the neighborhood, lit only by a single lamppost at the end of the block. An eerie fog blanketed the street, matching the sense of foreboding in her heart. For months, throughout her hiding spots in Switzerland, the Elemental, Flint, had been hot on her tail. However, embroiling him in her destined task seemed unfair, not to mention deadly.
Since last seeing the fire elemental, she’d considered his existence more than she cared to admit. What happened to peri-mortal beings when they died? How hot was his internal body temperature? How did his internal organs function under such conditions? Could he create fire without using the three necessary elements? Over and over these thoughts waved through her mind, driving her mad.
Enough! Keys in hand, Violet clicked open the lock to her co-worker’s flat and headed for the kitchen.
Then stilled.
Heat filled the room from a roaring fire, crackling and popping in the fireplace, flickering with welcoming warmth, and yet, her friend was still out of town.
“Good evening, Violet.”
A deep male voice, tinted with a faint Russian accent, drifted into the kitchen and sparked goose bumps across her skin.
He’d found her.
Violet fumbled the grocery bag in her arms before placing the burden on the counter. “How…how did you locate me?” She peeked around the corner into the living room, and there he sat.
Resting on his lap, a large bouquet of yellow roses popped with color against the darkness. The tissue paper crinkled as he shifted in the chair. “Pillar told me.” Flint’s raven-wing hair and amber eyes were only discernible by the flickering light dancing across his angular features.
Violet heaved a heavy sigh. “She’s developed a big sister complex where I’m concerned. This continual belief that I don’t know what’s best for my own life is insulting, not to mention ridiculous. My IQ is 185. So, this condescending attitude is quite unfair.” Glaring at the man sitting in shadow, she let the silence stretch for a moment. “I realize you may have reservations about Pillar, due to her past with Quint…and the whole relationship with…ah…Nodin.” Violet leaned against the doorway. “But she’s trying to change. You should give her a chance.”
“Don’t.” His tone turned harsh. “Don’t give that salty square your allegiance. She sought me out. That should speak for itself.” Flint waved a hand.
His gesture suggesting everything should be perfectly clear.
It wasn’t.
