While everyone else seems to have chosen a word to define and guide their year, I thought I’d take a moment to share my New Year’s resolutions. Normally, I don’t even bother making resolutions, because I think they are a futile effort… a Murphy’s Law sort of declaration of what you don’t want to accomplish over the next 365 days. And the idea of one simple word to encapsulate my year is enticing.
However, I'm a list kind of gal. I like to check things off (even as I add more!). and I’m going to begin 2016 with the positive mental attitude that I will keep my resolutions (maybe that should be resolution #1). And I hope that, by stating them to the world, my chances of seeing them to fruition will be even better. Here goes:
#1. Establish a website. As a writer, I really need one. I have purchased my domain name (www.avacuvay.com, in case you're interested). I just need to quit pondering the muse on how I want it to look and make it happen. It’s more of a challenge than I expected, because it has to portray who “I” am as Ava Cuvay, Romance Writer… and I’m still kinda figuring that out! The pressure to embody myself in a digital format, when it's taken me several decades to do that in a physical format. But, I will endure and achieve. A Website.
#2. Publish one book. I have one pretty much ready to go… I just need to do get all the “extra” stuff done, like back copy, ISBN numbers, cover art, uploading the booksellers, etc. You know, the “little” details. The minutia which seem so inconsequential and yet so overwhelming.
#3. Publish another book. I’m working on it! I have signed up for a full table at the July Writers on the River author signing event in Peoria, Illinois. I’ll look silly enough with only two books to promote and aaalllll that table space… but I’ll look downright pathetic with only one book to promote. I can’t even imagine how absolutely ridiculous I’ll look with no books to promote, so resolutions #2 and #3 really need to happen!
#4. Lose weight. Yes, this seems to be the ever-prevalent New Year’s Resolution for women, and I’m certainly not immune to the many holiday treats I enjoyed this season (you know, that festive season which starts in January and runs through the end of December). Aside from the important health benefits of losing weight, I have a really cool outer-space-inspired dress I want to wear to the Writers on the River event, and a few pounds off the waistline would make it look all the better on me. (I know, I totally have my priorities straight, don’t I?)

#5 Buy Teflon pants. We have two new sweet and utterly adorable (and not de-clawed) kittens in my household, and I am one of their favorite scratching/climbing posts. The Teflon will also come in handy when I finally publish and begin (hopefully) to accumulate reviews. Even the best authors can’t please everyone, and I’m… well… let’s just say I'm probably not everyone's cup of tea.
#6. Solve the world’s problems. It’s a hefty undertaking, I admit, but certainly a worthwhile endeavor. And I need something to keep the mind busy in between writing, promoting, working, raising a family, cooking, cleaning, commuting, etc.
So, enough about my stellar list… what are your New Year’s Resolutions?
