Michigan Retreat Day 1

We got off to a dandy start on Monday morning because (and we're totally blaming the universe for this one), Mercury is in retrograde. We were about fifty miles into our trip when Liz realized she'd left her phone at home. Well, no way could she do this trip without her phone, so we emergency called her hubs and he met us about halfway and brought her phone. Whew! Truthfully, it was fine to go back because I couldn't imagine going a whole week without my phone either! Besides, we're on vacation.

We drove to New Buffalo, MI and stopped there for lunch, but we didn't go to the restaurant the woman at the gas station recommended because there was a line out the door. Instead we went to Rosie's and it was grand! I had a waffle and Liz had a burger--the town was bustling with Labor Day visitors as was South Haven when we arrived mid-afternoon. The beach was wall to wall people! So we headed directly to the cottage, where our landlord met us and gave us a quick tutorial about the house.

It's darling--about a 6-block walk to the center of town and about 5 to the beach. Here are some pics of the place--as you can see the dining room is already our writing space. A great market is just up the street and we found French bread and avocados and salsa and watermelon and lots of other great stuff there.

Okay, it's Liz, and I'm here to tell you--I'm tired. Mercury's thing did me in. When we got in here and got settled down to work, I inserted my zip drive with my WIP on it into the USB on my laptop and in no time at all pushed the wrong key at the wrong time and lost the whole thing. Really? I mean, really? Thank goodness it's at home on my desktop waiting for me. But I will admit to having a small tantrum. It may have been medium-sized, but small is all I'm admitting to.

The house is so cute. It reminds me more of a trip-to-grandma's than a beachy house, but South Haven is a nice town. I'm looking forward to exploring tomorrow. Right now--and believe me, it's pretty early, staying awake is about all I can manage. Somebody sitting across the table from me isn't even doing that well!

Oh, and Nan had the idea to go ahead and start working on my WIP about where I had left off, then patch it in when I get back home, so that's what I'm doing. We'll see how it works out. I have been having such fun with it!

We're scoping out the prize for a commenter. We'll be hitting the shops soon, but right now it's time to hit the coffeepot. Nan brought beans and her coffee grinder and I'm anxious to get at that fragrant brew.

Happy birthday to Kristi from both of us! Have a great day. See you tomorrow!

  6. Have lots of fun and do lots of writing. Liz, tell me does Nan look at your work as a writer or an editor? I always double check if I respond to her posts because I want to make sure I am using the correct words, correctly!

    1. Lol. I'm not sure. When I'm finished, she sometimes edits; the rest of the time it's usually "what do you think?" I do like for my copy to be clean when she sees it!

    2. LOL, Carolyn! For what it's worth, Liz read over my WIP today and put in commas, fixed issues, and just generally, played the editor for me. It's lovely as an editor to get clean copy, but not mandatory--it's my job to fix it. ;-) Thanks for hanging with us on this trip! Happy to have you along!
