Tales From The Pantry

 by Margie Senechal

Sorry for the late post. I did one of those clopen shifts last night--the one where I close and don't get home until after 11:00 and have trouble falling asleep before midnight and have to get up at 5:30 to be at work by 7:00. So, there was no writing to be done this morning. I barely got my oatmeal and coffee made. If I didn't have a Keurig and microwave, those would've been in question as well.

So, yesterday I tackled a project I'd been putting off for quite some time. Cleaning out my pantry. How long, you might ask. Well, see that picture with the Chaser and 5-hour Energy? That was KB's 21st birthday barf and hangover bucket. She turns 30 in January.

Our pantry isn't that big--it's more of a glorified coat closet in our kitchen with shelves. The left side has deep shelves where things--KB's bucket, Mike's 50th birthday plates (he just turned 55)--get shoved to the back and forgotten.

I decided to turn the right side with the shallow shelves into my baking section so I could organize my spices and extracts. Since I've started cooking and baking more, I wanted the process to be a little more streamlined so I don't end up with two big bottles of cayenne. Seriously, who needs that much cayenne?? Cinnamon, I understand, but cayenne???

I found that I've started a cauldron collection and that I might have to bake sugar cookies soon so I can decorate cauldron cookies. I also have a plethora of food colorings and flavors. Again, why???

Okay, I know it's because they got lost in the deep, dark pantry. But, why does one need four boxes of food coloring? Plus, I'm pretty sure I have more in the gadget/junk drawer that also needs to be cleaned out. But, that's for another day. Another week. Possibly another month. Okay, let's be honest, if it gets done by the end of the year, it'll be a miracle.

You're right, this has nothing to do with writing. But, weren't you curious what a writer does when her muse is incommunicado?

Although, in the shower this morning, the muse whispered a secret in my ear for my WIP. And it's a good one. Sometimes she is so clever.

Now, if I could only remember what it was. It was 5:30 in the morning, folks. You're lucky I found my clothes.

Have a great evening!

  1. Lol! My muse always strikes when I'm elbow-deep in water with no access to computer or pen & paper! It might seem silly, but organizing a part of our lives--even a small one--gives us a sense of accomplishment and control. Congrats!

    1. I am actually better at doing it for others than myself because I have no attachment--LOL

  4. I totally agree with Ava. There's something about organizing that frees up space in the brain. It's as if decluttering one part of your life helps to declutter the thoughts scrambling around in your brain. And the shower thing? Why do I always get such good ideas in the shower that I forget by the time I get out?

    1. That makes sense, actually. Plus, the feeling of accomplishment is pretty hard to deny, too.
On the bright side, I remembered the great idea last night. Now, to take time and write it out.
