Goodnight, John-Boy . . .

So you've already figured it out, right?

This week's holiday theme is our favorite Christmas episodes from TV shows and that's one I don't even have to think about. Any Christmas episode from the iconic family show, The Waltons, which I confess, I was addicted to for the entire ten years it ran on CBS. It was the Thursday night must-see among my college dorm mates at Purdue. Every week, about twenty-five of us, clad in our jammies, would gather in front of the TV in Vawter Hall's rec room for our weekly dose of tears and homesickness. We had popcorn and chocolate and cokes and everyone sat rapt as the newest episode unfolded. Gosh, it was sappy . . . and lovely!

I'm also a sucker for all the holiday TV specials from the seventies--when I was first married and we snuggled together and watched the Bing Crosby, Bob Hope, and Andy Williams Christmas specials. Remember Andy's sweaters? Bing Crosby's Merrie Olde Christmas special back in 1977? He did that amazing duet of "Little Drummer Boy/Peace On Earth" with David Bowie--man, that one still blows me away.
Also, I'm not ashamed to admit that I miss the Norelco Santa--remember those commercials? And the Kodak "For the times of your life" commercials, where they decorated a tree out on a mountain? Which reminds me of John Denver's Rocky Mountain Christmas with the Muppets! I'm seriously going to have to check out Amazon and see if I can find DVDs of those old specials! How about you? And I'm going to ask another question, risking incurring the irritation of my Wrangler sisters--What's your favorite holiday commercial? I'm recalling all the touching Folger's commercials--with kids coming home from college or the service and surprising Mom and Dad with a pot of hot coffee . . .

BRENDA, congratulations! You're my winner from last week. I sent you an email. New giveaway this week, so be sure to comment for a chance to win!

  1. Oh, I love the commercials! Remember the McDonalds one where the kid peeks around the corner & sees Santa? Great post, Nan.

  2. Yes, I remember the Norelco Santa! Too fun! My favorite commercial has to be the Coke "teach the world to sing." I assume it's holiday specific, and that song rolls off the tongue as easily as the not-so-holiday A Joli perfume and Oscar Meyer Balogna commercial jingles!

  3. One of the funniest is the Santa and M & M's commercial. "He does exist/They do exist" That one always makes me smile. I love the commercials.

  5. Oh, I had such the crush on John-Boy-in-reruns as a kid...and I still like the schmaltziness of that show. The Greatest Christmas episode is one of my faves (the one where none of them make it home for Christmas dinner because of an ice storm)

    1. Oh, yes! That was a terrific one! Didn't we all have a crush on John-Boy, although now, I look at Ralph Waite and think he was pretty cool, too! Age, you know...

  6. @Norelco Santa: Miss him dearly!

@M&M Commercial: One of the best, as well as the Hershey Kiss one playing 'We Wish You A Merry Christmas'.

@Coke: YES! Bring it back....bring them ALL back!

@Waltons: My fave will ALWAYS be Jason:) Just could not stop staring at John-Boy's mole....or wondering why a grown man would still be called 'John-boy'. (Yes, I was not the kindest child....)

  7. I'm like Molly--total Jason fan. I think because he was closer to my age, John-Boy was like an adult to me. LOL

One of my favorite Christmas episodes are from Bones. When Brennen stays to celebrate Christmas with her dad and brother in prison, Booth and his son light up a tree just outside the fence so they have a Christmas tree for their celebration. Plus, the first Bones Christmas when they get quarantined in the Jeffersonian and the viewers get a little insight to all their private lives. That's also a good one. Have I ever mentioned that Bones is my go-to show??
