Getting Past the Gloomy

I've been away from social media--no Facebook and no Twitter--for a week now. You'll recall I gave up social media for Lent. I knew this wouldn't be a piece o' cake. I'm pretty attached to Facebook and sorta connected to Twitter.

Frankly, it hasn't been very easy. I miss the camaraderie of Facebook, and I can't help wondering if anyone at all is missing me being there. Not that it matters. I'm gone for 40 days. So what am I learning from this hiatus? First of all, that I am much more attached to social media than I ever thought I was. It's making me gloomy not to be on it and not much fun to be around. But I am determined to do this, so I figure the gloomy will get better π… π…Ÿπ…žπ…‘ as time goes by π… π…‘π…Ÿπ…‘.

I'm also discovering that I spent a lot more time on FB and Twitter than I would've guessed before last week because suddenly, I have all kinds of time. So, I've been reading more, I'm binge-watching The West Wing again in preparation for Lani Diane Rich's new podcast JED BARTLET IS MY PRESIDENT. The first episode of the Chipperish podcast drops tomorrow--don't miss it! She does a great job breaking down the story. I'm also getting my news from NPR, PBS, CNN, and The New York Times websites instead of following links from Facebook, which is probably giving me a truer picture of national and world events.

I'm knitting. I'm almost done with the baby blanket I'm making for my nephew and his wife, whose babe is due in August. Then I'll start a new one for my other nephew and his wife, whose babe is due in June. Yes, sister PJ is going to be a grammy x2 this summer. She's over the moon. Above is a pic of the blanket I'm currently working on. I don't think it looks too bad for a left-handed knitter who really got scolded by the owner of knitting store this past weekend because I "shouldn't be knitting left-handed, rather you should learn to do it the right way--right-handed." You'll be proud of me, I didn't tell her to stick her snooty knitting attitude where the sun never shines. Instead, I listened politely, nearly had heart failure at the prices of her yarn, and walked out without making a single purchase.

I''m editing, I'm writing, I'm critiquing, I'm thinking a lot about the next book, and where I want to go with the current story . . . kinda stuck right now, so I've got to figure that out. Husband and I have been taking walks and I hit the pool with much greater regularity.

So that's the update, kids. Please stop by and visit me here and at my own blog at www.nanreinhardt.com. I miss you guys! I need news!! Tell me everything I've missed for the last week!

  1. Sounds as if you're staying busy! Although I don't want to detach from FB, I do need to set some kind of timer so that I spend MUCH less time on it!

    1. So far, I'm still breathing, Ava, which tells me I'm not as needy of FB as I thought I was... thanks for stopping by!

  3. I haven't given up FB entirely, but since I can't get internet at workπŸ˜ͺ, I'm reading a lot more on my breaks. And I'm kind of enjoying the break. I transfer to a new store on Thursday so I don't know if my internet exile will hold but, I think I'm going to pretend if it doesn't and keep reading. We'll see! And I am so impressed with your will power!

  4. Nan, we do miss you but stay strong. It is amazing how much we are able to get done when we eliminate some of the things which eat up our time. I have tried to knit many times but just don't have the patience to stay with it. I do crochet and quilt. Looking forward to our writers group next week.
