DUNKIRK - The Movie and the Book Promotion

Yesterday, the movie DUNKIRK, starring Kenneth Branagh, Mark Rylance, Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, and Harry Styles (making his acting debut), opened in North America. This movie tells the real life story of the miracle evacuation of Allied troops from the coast of France in 1940. The Nazi blitzkrieg had overrun France and Belgium with a speed no one thought possible, trapping four hundred thousand British, Belgian, French and Canadian troops at Dunkirk, with no way to get across the English Channel. But then, like the movie trailer says, when the troops couldn't get home, home came for them. While the Germans waited for their supply lines to catch up, a flotilla of seacraft - naval, merchant and civilian - raced across the Channel. Between May 26 and June 4, 1940, some 338,000 troops were ferried to safety. Here's the official trailer for DUNKIRK:

France, 1942. The world is at war. The Nazis have stolen the infamous blue diamond, Le Coeur Bleu, intending to barter it for weapons that will destroy the Allies. Jewel thief Hunter Smith is given a choice; help the French Resistance steal back the diamond and avenge the death of his best friend, or stay locked up in an English prison. He chooses revenge.

Resistance fighter Madeleine Bertrand’s husband died when he was betrayed by Hunter Smith. How can she now pretend to be married to the arrogant American? How can she betray Jean Philippe’s memory by her passionate response to Hunter’s kisses? Neither is prepared for the maelstrom of attraction that erupts between them. To survive they must uncover the mysteries of the past and conquer the dangers of the present. But first Madeleine must decide if her loyalties lie with her dead husband and the Resistance or with the greatest love of her life.

Badly wounded and scarred during the war, Erik Gustafson thinks he’s a poor substitute for his brother.
