Starting Over @Liz Flaherty

Good morning! I hope you all had great holidays and are settling happily and productively into 2018. We are in the midst of a cold spell here in Indiana, complete with requisite snow and grumpiness. Although I've been out and about, my urge to do...well, anything, is suffering. My daily word count is hovering somewhere between seven and ten and my brain cells seem to be frozen along with the tundra outside my office window.

We've been working on 2018 direction for Word Wranglers. As you can probably imagine, weekly blogging gets a little...difficult sometimes. With the number of comments so reduced, we don't know what you think these days. We are so happy that the number of "hits" we get every day hasn't gone down, and we thank you for coming by, but we want to give you reasons to come back--over and above our natural talent and charm, that is. We want the blog to stay active  and we want it to be fun. Do you have any ideas for us?

My word for the year is actually six of them. Here they are, copied and pasted from another blog.
(1) Acceptance. Because I have the most godawful tendency to dwell on things and not let them go. (Emphasis intended--it's that bad.)
(2) Laughter. Because if you can't get through the day any other way, that's definitely a good one.
(3) Prioritize. Because, you know, I'm not good at it and I need to learn. Right away before I do anything else.
(4) Remember. Because I forget things all the time. Every time I mislay something, the word dementia runs screaming through my mind and even though it's probably an unavoidable rite of aging, I'm terrified of it.
(5) Appreciate. Because I should. Always.
(6) Kindness. Because. Just because.

I'm starting a new book. The idea has been percolating in my head and on occasional notes for months, yet when I opened a new file, my mind moved inexorably toward blankness. I gave the heroine the wrong name--I'm never going to get to use "Emory Alice"; she won't tell me her story--and have been frozen in place on page three for a week now.

I wonder, as I always have, why not every story needs to be told. Especially when I want to tell it. My profound thought for the day. Have a great week.

  1. OOh, I love that name, Liz...and I hope you figure out what her real name is so you can tell her story.

    1. Me, too. I just went back to scratch. Hope the muse wakes up soon!

  2. Emory Alice found frozen in place. Now you must work backwards for her story.
I love reading your blogs because they're a warm accepting place and pleasant, unlike the political hate gone wild elsewhere.

  3. My muse seems to be feeling lazy lately, too. Maybe the muses overdid Christmas?

    1. Maybe that's it, Beth. Wherever she is, I wish she'd come back!

  4. Emory Alice will one day tell you her story. Until then, find the characters for the story in your head. Funny how names become so important, isn't it? Hugs, baby!

  5. How about Emiry Alice the (insert occupation, even if it’s wrong)... maybe that will get her talking?

    1. I swear. I started over again yesterday, since the previous beginning...well, sucked, is what it did, and there was that daggone Emory Alice again!

  6. I love your words! On the Emory Alice situation--I recently advised Jordan just to begin anywhere, because the beginning rarely stays the same anyway. Just take a leap and jump into the story. If I don't have a character's name yet, I've even been known to put a _______ to be filled in later.

Good luck! Hope to meet Emory Alice or at least her story soon.

    1. I've had a few of those blanks, too! I jumped again yesterday. We'll see...

  7. Love your words, Liz. They are words to live by. Don't sweat the name thing. You're such a good writer that I know Emory Alice, or whatever her name is, will tell you her story soon.

    1. I hope you're right, Jana. Right now, Emory and I are in a churchyard...with nowhere to go! :-)
