I’ve already accomplished one of my goals. I was able to cut back on some of my duties at the day job which means less time at the office and more time at home writing. At one point last summer I was angry and frustrated and ready to quit the day job completely. But since then we’ve hired a new group of young people who have totally invigorated the office and made it a fun place to work. So, I’m happy to come in once or twice a week and hang out with them. Having these young, energetic people around means I was able to hand over some of my duties guilt-free. It’s a win-win; I was able to work less and they learned new skills. Everybody’s happy. Especially me.
Another of my goals is to increase the number of words I write in 2020. I hope to do that by being more consistent with my writing and writing most days, even if it’s only for a short time or only a small number of words. As they say, slow and steady wins the race, emphasis on steady. I’ve mostly stuck to this goal since January 1 and I will continue to make it my priority as the year progresses. But if I slip up, I'm not going to beat myself up about it. Life is too short.
Another of my writing goals is getting better at marketing. At the moment I’m teaching myself how to create Amazon ads. My hope is to at least make back the money I spent on the course I’m taking. I’ll let you know how it turns out.
I want to enjoy the process of writing more in 2020. I want to take the time to marvel at the magic of putting words on paper. Finishing the writing of a book is great, but I can’t forget to celebrate the little victories along the way, such as composing a perfect phrase or an apt description. If the job isn’t fun, why would I want to do it?
To having fun in 2020! |
I’m with you on enjoying the process—that’s so important. Good luck with your goals, Jana!
ReplyDeleteThanks Liz! I sometimes get so focused on getting things done that I forget about having fun. More focus on that in 2020!
