"...merry mending..." by Liz Flaherty @WordWranglers

I had surgery on January 20. I didn't think it was a big one--a disc fusion--but it was referred to as "major surgery" and they did put me to sleep and make me spend the night in the hospital. It was successful, I couldn't have asked for better caregivers--including the one I'm married to--and...well, I'm glad to have it done.

I'm also a little stupid. I don't know that anesthesia does that to everyone, but it does to me. I've come into the office every day since I came home, and I've accomplished numerous games of Solitaire. I've worried because--gasp! what if I can never write again? What if the brain never comes back to full function?

I have to admit that some of the time, I'm enjoying the convalescence. My pain is minimized by pills, I don't have to think up something to cook for dinner and my daughter came over and did my hair because my arms aren't up to the task. My appetite has been slightly diminished, which is good for my weight loss journey, and...what was I going to say?

Although I wear makeup most days, I don't worry about it if I don't. My husband's always loved the face under the mask and if there's anyone who doesn't, that's their problem, not mine. These post-surgery days, when I look in the mirror, I swear, not even a mother could love that face. Having had surgery and general anesthesia before, I know this will get better, but I... Won't it? Won't it get better?

I've been on social media a lot, purely socially. I remember when that's what Facebook was (or I just thought it was) and I enjoyed it so much. (I wrote this paragraph a few days back. That particular fun has gone away with the ugliness of politics. Yesterday someone my kids went to school with informed me that lying was okay because everyone does it. Ruined my day. I suppose I need to start lying now, but I just don't have the heart for it.)

And back I am to the stupid part...would someone jump in here and tell me it's going to away any minute now? Still waiting...

If you've stuck with me this far, thank you. If you've given up, I can understand that. I'm really hoping for some advice about getting my brain back.

I hate to end this with absolutely no reason for it even being here, so let me give you some reading suggestions. I read all these BEFORE the surgery, but enjoyed every one of them.

Thanks for your patience. Have a good week.

  1. ;-) You make me smile! Yeah, anesthesia stupid hangs around for a couple of weeks as I understand it. It certainly did for me when I had my foot surgery. One of the joys of ageing?? I just started The Quiche of Death...I'll report back when I'm done. Hugs, baby--it will get better!

  2. aw, I hope the convalescence works its magic quickly and you feel more like your old self...but better! I've never had surgery (major or minor) so I'm no help on the anaesthia (how the heck do you spell that word, anyway?) bit. But thanks for the book recs!

  3. Thanks for the update, Liz. I'm so pleased the surgery went well and I'm sure you'll be back to feeling better soon. Our bodies are mysterious things, aren't they? And thanks so, so much for the shout out! Allie, Ursi and the gang really appreciate the time you spend with them!

  4. You can count on anesthesia to make you feel tired and not up to much of anything. And if you combine that with pain meds, well, you might as just enjoy the convalescence for a while. You'll get better, but I've got to say that even when you're stupid you're a great writer! Take care.
