Monday, Tuesday, Thursday... Oh, Who Knows?

Remember when Tuesday meant you had a good start on the week, it was a pool day, and you knew Husband would be at work and the kid would be at school? When the weekend was well and truly over and you were into the week? I have a confession—Husband's been retired nearly six years now and I rarely know what day it is. Seriously, I don't. Most of the time I couldn't tell you whether it was Sunday or Thursday.

It's even worse at the lake because every day at the lake feels like Saturday. Weird phenomenon, but it's true. The only way I can keep track of anything happening during the summer is to consult my trusty Google calendar, which I check each morning, religiously, because I still have to tend to editing gigs and write, even at the lake. (Sad face for Nan, here.)

So here's the thing. Husband, the little cutie you see here showing off because he cleaned up the kitchen, loves the freedom of not caring what day of the week it is. Heck, he loves not even knowing what time it is! He took his watch off the day he retired and he hasn't worn it since. I work at home—mostly on a deadline, but it's a nebulous this book is due back to the publisher on a date two or three weeks out kind of deadline. So, although I have to know my deadline date, I don't need to know specifically what day of the week it's due... or what day of the week today is, for that matter.

I really need to get more attuned to what day of the week it is however, because I'm going to start promotion for Book 4 in my Four Irish Brothers Winery series from Tule Publishing soon. I'll be blog touring and posting hither and yon about Brendan and Tierney’s as-yet-untitled book which releases in July, not sure of the date, but what does it matter, I won’t know what day it is anyway.

So talk to me, do you always know what day it is? Do you care what day it is? Retirement means not having to care, but there's also a certain amount of security in knowing that today is Tuesday. It is Tuesday, right?

Until next time, mes amies, remember, hold your face to the sun, be grateful for all things, and love well.

  1. I don't usually know what day it is--or care, which explains why I occasionally miss commitments. :-( But that's my favorite quote of all time. Great post, Nan.

  2. I regularly forget what date of the week it is, Nan, so it's not just a retirement thing. Mostly, I don't mind, but there are times when it bugs me that I can't/don't/won't keep the days straight. It's a good thing I like planners! lol

  4. Day it is?! Heck!!! Half the time I can't remember what month we're in! Feel proud of the fact you're just a day or two off.

  5. I'm kind of the opposite, Nan. I still work part-time, mostly Tuesdays and Thursdays, so I better know what day it is. But even if I was fully retired I think I'd have to know. For some reason, knowing the date and the time grounds me; if I forget my watch I'm discombobulated. It's just my personality I guess. A little bit tightly wound. Good luck with your upcoming release!

  6. Yes, I always know what day it is, what time it is, and what the date is.

That's what happens when you work full-time and in retail. LOL If my schedule gets jacked up--I'm definitely lucky to have somewhat of a set work schedule--I have to sometimes remind myself of the day when I wake up and then my responsibilities flood my mind and I want to go back to bed. LOL

Although when I'm off work, all bets are off--especially on vacation. I don't pay attention at all then.
