Love in a Dangerous Time by Jana Richards

When my daughter and her fiancé got engaged in March 2019 and set their wedding date for August 15, 2020, none of us had any idea what was headed our way. The corona virus pandemic has played havoc with all aspects of our lives. For the most part, I’ve been able to roll with most pandemic-related things that have come my way. But my daughter’s wedding? That one’s going to be tough.

A Manitoba tradition is having a wedding social a few months before the actual wedding. A social is essentially a big party put on by the engaged couple and their families to raise money for the wedding. Ahead of the social, tickets to attend were sold to pretty much everyone we know. Prizes were bought (we bought a TV on Black Friday-it’s still sitting in a box in my living room) and businesses were solicited for donations. On the evening of the social, tickets were to be sold on the prizes in a silent auction. We planned to provide food and drinks, and we expected that everyone would have a good time. We had a hall rented, a DJ booked, prizes in place and a date selected – April 9, the Thursday before Good Friday.

And then the pandemic hit and the social went out the window. The next casualty was the bridal shower which was going to take place on May 31. Again, a hall was booked and plans made. We decided to push the date back to June 27, not knowing if the May date would be possible. At this point, it looks like the shower may be a driveway-drive-by event, but with things loosening up a little, that may change by the end of June.

But we’re really not sure what’s going to happen with the wedding itself. Over 250 people were to be invited, far more then the number of people currently allowed to assemble in a group. The hotel gave our daughter and her fiancé an alternative date: December 5, 2020, but there’s no guarantee a wedding of this size will be able to go ahead on that date either. Even if it is, some guests may decide attending such a large event is too risky. And keep in mind: there’s a big difference between the temperature of an August wedding and one in December. After all, this is Canada, in arguably the coldest city on the Canadian prairies. The kids have to let the hotel know what they want to do by the end of June.

So, we roll with it. Or at least we try, because really, what else are we going to do? The main thing is, they're getting married this year. The wedding? Wait and see.

  1. Oh, wow, what a series of mis-events. I hope things calm and go well. It's so easy to say it's the marriage that counts and not the wedding, but weddings are still important.

  2. It is the marriage that counts, for sure, but they've already put a lot of time and energy and money into the planning. To make things even more difficult, my future son-in-law had to have an emergency appendectomy last Saturday. He developed serious complications and is still in the hospital. Hospitals are still locked down, so no one can visit him, not even my daughter, who is a nurse herself. He's slowly getting better, so with luck, he'll be out next week. This too shall pass. I hope.
