Happy almost Halloween! This year’s going to be a different
one, isn’t it? In parts of Canada, some municipalities have cancelled door to
door trick and treating due to concerns about spreading the COVID-19 virus. As
of this writing, my city has not cancelled trick or treating, but public health
has urged people to pass out treats from a safe distance. Dr. Theresa Tam,
Canada’s Chief Public Health Officer, famously told people to offer kids their
treats on the end of a hockey stick. How Canadian!
Alas, we have no hockey sticks in our house. So, I had to
settle for filling a tub (previously used for keeping beer and wine cold) with
bags of treats. We plan to set it out on the driveway and let the neighborhood
kids help themselves. I’ve made up fifty bags, which is typically the number of
trick and treaters that come to our house most years. But of course, 2020 is
hardly typical. I might have a lot of mini chocolate bars left this year.
For me, the best part of Halloween is seeing the kids’ costumes
up close when I hand out candy. It’s not going to be the same this year. Just
one more thing this pandemic has changed.

Love the tub! Happy Halloween, Jana!
ReplyDeleteI like the tub, too. We bought it for another pandemic pivot in September when we used it at our daughter's wedding. It kept the wine nice and cold. Happy Halloween, Liz!
DeleteWell, if nothing else, this pandemic is making us more creative on how to keep traditions alive. It's sad, though, when those "traditions" look nothing like they used to. Have a wonderful Halloween, Jana, no matter how it looks this year.
ReplyDeleteTalk about creative, I saw one guy on the news who created a little Ferris wheel with orange plastic buckets to distribute the candy. It was adorable! Unfortunately, as I write this at 5pm on Oct.31, the weather has turned horrible. We've got a mix of rain and snow and high winds. I'm not sure we're going to have many trick and treaters tonight.
DeleteAn update: There were almost no kids out for Halloween on our street and so I have a lot of candy left. We'll probably eat some of it, but I plan to take most of it to the food bank. I didn't think I'd miss Halloween but I really did!
ReplyDeleteI still love your commitment for trying to make Halloween happen regardless. Now, with a vaccine on the horizon, HOPEFULLY, we can have an all out monster mash next year!
