Today, I Don't Feel Like Doing Anything

So far this summer I've done a good job of staying on top of things - I've turned in copy edits on 2 books, drafted another - well, almost, I should finish within the next week. Ish. Assuming I can beat the procrastination. I attended RWA and learned and TON (and had a ton of fun with author friends new and old). Went on a family vacation pre-RWA, have a family reunion this weekend that I'm almost prepared for. Still, there comes a time every day when his song could be my theme song:

I always know when something big is coming up, because I find way more things to do than...well, any other time. In. My. Life. Summer seems like the worst season - ever and for always - for procrastination because there are the things to do. Like go on a picnic, spend an afternoon at the beach or poolside, take a vacation, attend a conference. Lunch. Be silly.

Deadlines? Pffffffft! Doesn't the publishing world go on vacation from June through August?

Buying school supplies? Ehhhhh...we've still got. Ah, criminy! School starts in 3 days (it doesn't, not here anyway).

The list goes on.

Last week Wrangler Margie sent us all a little prezzie in the mail - I got a set of coasters, all writing related. I think my favorite one is Snoopy writing because you guys know how much I lurrve the Snoop. But the ones that have spoken to me the most are the 2 in the middle. First, how could Hulk, Iron Man, Thor and Captain America pointing at a girl not inspire a girl to get to work? And the other, because it's true: we are writers. We write. We don't talk about it. We don't wish we were writing. We don't come up with a million reasons not to finish that chapter or scene or that last round of edits.

We write because we have stories to tell.

So, when the procrastination is getting to you, when you can't stand another second at your desk....pull out Bruno Mars and take a mental vacation for the length of The Lazy Song...

And then get back to work.

  3. Love Bruno's Lazy Song :) And so glad you found inspiration in your coasters :)
Since I've not been working, I've found it hard to get in a routine. Apparently I need structure. Guess I'll have to work on that.

    1. Structure is crucial! When I first started writing full time it was so hard to figure out what kind of schedule would work for me. You'll figure it out, Margie!

  4. I've never heard that song. That was fun! I'm the opposite. I find it easier to work during the summer. Come January, February, it's so cold and dark. And there's more time during the summer, more light. I don't feel as if I've spent all my day cooped up inside. I can still go walking in the evenings or cook out after I've spent the day writing.

    1. Oh, I love the long, cold days when I don't have to get out of my jammies and I can just write and write and write...you know, when I'm not whining about the fact that it's brutally cold outside... LOL, Sia.

  5. I'm the biggest procrastinator in the world. I seem to write more in the winter. Too much fun stuff to do in the summer.
