Do You Hodgepodge Or Theme?

Seeing as how my blogs here at WordWranglers always sticks to a subject (bwahaha), it will probably completely surprise you that during The Most Wonderful Time of the Year, my house is a hodgepodge of decoration. We have a tree with ornaments collected over they years that don't match. I have a Boyd's Bears 'Night Before Christmas' wall hanging on one wall, Lennox snowman ornaments from my grandmother (names engraved), a Precious Moments Nativity fighting for space with a veritable Nutcracker Army on the hearth...it's a conglomoration of every thing...and I love it.

The pictures I'm including are three of my favorite ornaments, and one has been on the tree for less than a week. It's the one above - a family of owls hanging on the tree; bebe picked it out because, in her words, 'now we're like Pooh's family, too'. She's slightly obsessed with Pooh. I don't know why.

And then there is the ornament to the left - which reminds me of a Norwegian Christmas. Not that I've visited Norway or Sweden or Finland..but I think they probably have white Christmases and I really want a true, white Christmas one of these days.

And then there are the plethora of bebe-personalized ornaments. I like the one below because it's so her - she would wear a tiara every day of her life if we let her. What 6-year-old (or, ahem, 36-year-old) wouldn't? But the colors are her and for whatever reason, each year it comes out of the box she sits on the floor and just holds it for a few minutes, looking at it. Tracing her little fingers over the letters. Then, she grins and picks a spot on the tree and proceeds to move any ornaments surrounding it so the crown stands out.

So our tree is a hodge-podge of ornaments and memories...its the best kind of tree, I think. Although I really, really like the decorator version of trees - with bows and matching ornaments.

What about you? Is your tree a hodge-podge or do you have a theme when you decorate?

  1. I love the theme trees because they are so beautiful, but nothing on a theme tree would ever add up to the tiara story. (I have a splendid one of these of my own--we need to have a tiara day!) I love watching Princess Shelby grow up. Great post!

    2. I bet you'd be surprised to learn that I also have a total hodge-podge tree as well. My ornaments are indicative of my interests and the girl's over the years, plus family heirlooms. I have hand-painted glass balls done my a great-great aunt circa the twenties or thirties. I have ornaments that were my grandmothers--including some bead ones she made one year. I have my Hallmark Mary's Angels collection, a Popsicle-stick glitter star Kristen made in second or third grade with her picture in the middle. I have Mexican ornamental balls in vibrant colors that I bought the first year Mike and I were married. And elves--my newest obsession :) But every one comes with a memory attached.

On the top of our entertainment cabinet--circa 90's--I put up my Peanuts collection.

And as to why Bebe is obsessed with Pooh--because he's awesome. Pooh and my girls go way back. When the girls were little, Disney started airing new episodes. Stripes--when Tigger loses his stripes in a bath--is one of my favorites."I didn't know Eeyores had X-way vision."

And I'm all for Tiara Day. Maybe in late winter when we're all tired of rain and snow :)

    3. I keep thinking she'll outgrow the Pooh thing. I don't want her to, and I'll cry when she does.... :)

You need to share a pic of your tree - it sounds perfect!!
