November, sweet memories, and Turkey Run

In May of this year, seven other writers and I went to Turkey Run State Park for a retreat. It was a
time some of us needed, some of us just wanted, and all of us enjoyed. We ate, we brainstormed, we talked, we firmed up friendships that had been firm anyway, we drank wine. I had the best time and I hope the others did, too, but I remember whining a little to Nan that I didn't get as much work done as I would have liked.

Several months later, an opportunity came up to write a short Thanksgiving story for Harlequin. A free online read. I had no idea what to write...I never have ideas; we've talked about that before. But I did have sweet memories of The Narrows Restaurant and funny ones of no telephone reception. The park's name was Turkey Run. Not only that, I knew the contents of my special education teacher daughter's trunk. What else did I need?

There will be 13 stories in all, all written by Harlequin Heartwarming authors, starting November 2. Just go to the Harlequin website. My story, Wedding at Turkey Run, will post on November 4, but don't wait!

I hope you love them all. Here's the calendar. And did I mention they're free? And that there are all kinds of giveaways all over the place? I don't have them here, but I'm sure they'll jump out of Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest at you!

Enjoy!

  1. Liz, I can't wait to read it, and to see how your characters solved the no telephone reception problem. We're cookies involved? 😀

  4. What a great idea! I'm looking forward to reading this. Some of the comments here sound like they're from your cohorts and know more to the stories :) Best of luck.

  5. I love your Turkey Run story--it's fabulous and brought back so many good memories or our days there! It's so much fun to read a story about a place you know, don't you think? And yes...some of the stuff that happened at Turkey Run should definitely STAY at Turkey Run!!

    1. It was just the most fun! We'll be leaving things unspoken-about in Chicago next year, too. Right, Ava?

  6. Yay, it comes out on my day off. I can enjoy it right away :) And I want to say, the only time I wish I lived somewhere else--except maybe France--is when you girls talk about your writing adventures :)

    1. I wish you could come, too, Margie. Muriel Jensen, one of my favorite writers and best writer friends, lives in Astoria, OR. Is that close or is it a state-and-a-half away or so? She would be a hoot for you to connect with!

  7. My wife and I spent some time touring Indiana state parks this summer, but we never got to Turkey Run -- maybe next year! It does get a mention in the humor book I'm working on, though.

Some of the scenes in my first novel take place at Chain O' Lakes -- maybe we should start a state park book club. :-)

    1. LOL. I could do that. I LOVE the state parks, although I've been to fewer than half. Clifty Falls is my favorite, but Turkey Run was a close second.

    2. Clifty Falls is beautiful, but it's on the other end of the state from me! Chain O' Lakes is only a few miles from my home, and my wife works at the saddle barn at Pokagon, so those two have to be my favorites.
