Getting Through The Cluttered Mind

by Margie Senechal

This meme pretty much sums up my process. Lots of thinking that sometimes leads to typing.

I don't know if I have figured out what feeds my muse the best. IF I did, I might have more written.

Like everyone else, I read, watch television and movies, eat...but, what's the winning ticket?

The last few weeks, I've been feeling as if I'm surrounded in chaos. My furniture, circa the 90's or older--is too big, my office is too stuffed with stuff--cue George Carlin here, and don't even get me started on the garage--agh @#%!! There's not even a clear path to the fuse box anymore. Clutter, clutter, clutter.

I think my muse needs me to get organized, so she can think without worrying about the muss.

I'm a good organizer. It's what I do at work. Find places for new product, rearrange walls of product to create an attractive and shoppable area. And while I focus on that, the muse thinks in the back recesses of my mind.

So,when I begin the organization process at home, I find my mind wondering into fields of words. And then--look, there are pages of a book I started last year. I glance at the pages, sitting to read them. This was good--why did I stop? I even had two agents interested with the pitch, but then---oh yeah, Ana and the suitcases came along.

My problem isn't a muse. It's focus. Getting and staying focused. Time and focus. Oh, and clutter.

So--I need a decluttering maid, a time-turning watch like Hermoine had, and a Limitless pill. That should do it and then I'll be able to write unheathered.

  1. Oh, baby! This is great and so very true! Focus. Time and Focus. How right you are!!

  2. Focus is so important, you're right! I can force myself to focus, but like you I seem to focus best when I'm working on something else: cleaning/decluttering, sewing, sometimes even cooking.

    1. Driving the car is my ultimate focus time. Best ideas ever happen when I can't scribble down a note ;)

  3. If you can find the answer for time and focus and then package and sell it you can be a wealthy woman. Clutter drives me nuts also (coming from a woman who nicknamed her husband, Pack Rat).

    1. If I figure it out, Carolyn, I'll let you in on the secret.

  4. When we do it all day at work, we don't want to come home and do it, too! I recommend mastering a blind eye to turn away from the clutter (easier than de-cluttering!). And it's okay to bounce between multiple stories... Just keep writing, Margie :-)

    1. Thanks, Ava. I think I have a plan to focus on more than one story. If it works, I'll let you all know in a later blog. And you know, maybe send some chapters in for critique.

  5. I love it!! Doesn't it feel good to know we're not all alone?
I love the meme you chose to go with the post.

    1. Thanks Trisha--I was struggling with what to write for this week's topic and then saw the meme and light bulb! And yes, it is so comforting to know I'm not the only one :)

  6. Lol. Those needs sound manageable to me!

    1. I think so. But, in retrospect, I think I should've just requested a maid period--my house could use a good dust bunny hunter :)
