My Favorite Holiday Recipe

Take one bottle of lovely french Champagne, one bag of kettle-cooked potato chips, and a mix of fun family and friends. Fill with laughter and good times. Serves all; makes great memories.

That’s my favorite Holiday Recipe. The Champagne and potato chips are mostly for me because they fill my belly with joy, but I am happy to share. The most important ingredient in that recipe is the family and friends—Oh, wait… we were talking food recipes this week, weren’t we? Oops!

I wish I had that one recipe I make every year, but I don’t. Circumstances, energy, and the creative muse ebb and flow, and I’m just not that good of a cook (unless you count making macaroni and cheese from the box as quality skills)… Sometimes I go all out, sometimes I just get by. There are certainly dishes from my childhood that I could share. And current favorites. Cut-out cookies decorated by the kiddos (not pretty enough to give as gifts, but definitely edible, and that’s all they care about!). Hubby’s favorite No-bake cookies or the surprisingly easy biscotti or the tart and addictive cranberry bars. Some sort of easy-to-make breakfast like what Kristi posted that won’t keep me from all the excitement of opening presents on Christmas morning.

But in the end, it’s less about what I make or buy to give as gifts or put in our mouths, and much more the time we get to spend together. The celebratory essence of the season reminds us to stop for at least a moment and give thanks for our blessings and appreciate the loved ones in our lives.
So I try to mix in as much time with friends and family as I can to my holidays. The results are always wonderful and heart-warming, and quite frankly, it’s a recipe even I can’t mess up!

  1. I have that mac and cheese recipe down pat, too. The sad thing is, when I've made it from scratch, it wasn't as good. Good post, Ava.
