Following the Muse

by Margie Senechal

About a year ago I had a writing plan I titled the Chaos plan in which I would write on a different project every day. Each of four projects had an assigned day and I had a Wednesday Wonder day for the project of my heart--other writers have called that their Sunday book, but since I work on Sundays, I decided to dedicate my Wednesdays to that project.

That plan lasted about the time it took me to record the schedule on my white board. Okay, maybe a week or so longer.

I've never considered myself to be ADD, but when it comes to writing, I'm beginning to wonder. Since I finished the last (#8) rewrite of Bix, I haven't been able to settle down and focus on one single project.

I have probably seven viable projects with between 10k-35K words completed and I keep vacillating between them--a month on this one, a week on that one. For a woman who's been married to the same man for over 30 years, why can't I commit??

Should I let my untethered muse continue to lead me astray? Or should I stand up to her and say, "No. Today we're going to work on the Nobodies--if you don't like it, leave. And I'll do it on my own."

And then--do it on my own.

  1. I love this, Margie, and I love you--and I think you have to stand up to her. The term, "Out of my way, bitch," keeps coming to mind. :-)

  2. O.M.G. Liz used the "b" word! But I agree. Much like her blog about the sagging middle, that's ofyen when I get tempted with new ideas and have to force myself to slog through!

  3. As someone who also has several projects in the mill I have to agree with Liz on this. Set yourself a goal on one particular project (I'm sure the Wranglers would be glad to hold you accountable) then when you reach it, reward yourself with a couple of days to be free to write where ever the muse takes you. Then dear padwan you must get back to the project and your next goal. It sucks sometimes to be a grownup writer but hey, there is wine

  4. Ohhh, I like Annie's idea. Especially the wine part. Sometimes we have to fool/placate/beat-the-crap out-of our muses. Sometimes a shiny new story captures our interest because the going gets tough on the current WIP (been there, bought the T-shirt). That's when you have to be disciplined with your muse, but throw her a bone, like Annie suggested, just enough to keep her happy. I wish you successful writing, Margie!
