My plan had been to finish a first draft of the third book of my time-travel romance series by the end of the year. But I currently have only about a quarter of that book written, and what I've written so far is pretty messy. There's only a couple of weeks left in 2024, and Christmas is happening during that time, so it's very unlikely my word count is going change much.
Part of the reason I've come to a crashing halt is, of course, because of Christmas. There's been shopping to do, cookies to bake, gifts to wrap. You know the drill. My first mistake was thinking that I would get a lot of writing done in December. I'm not going to make that mistake again.
Then I got edits back for the second book in the series from my editor. There's a lot of work to be done on that book to get it into shape, more than I thought there would be. It stopped me in my tracks. And I wondered, should I continue writing book 3, or should I go back and work on book 2?
I ended up doing neither.
Because what really stopped my forward momentum was getting sick, twice now in the span of three weeks.
It's nothing major--just a lousy cold--but twice? Come on!
So I'm taking it as a sign to slow down, and put the writing on the back burner until the New Year. It will still be there when I get back. A little self-care is in order.
